I hate dandelions!

But i do love a mixture of green and iceberg. Now that purple lettuce is a whole other story.

Brock - 2/2/2012 at 07:15 PM

I am very fond of green leafy substances.

You wouldn't discriminate because of color, would you?

I used to dislike dandelions in my yard until an old timer I ran into at the boat launch where I work offered me some dandelion wine........not bad....now when I see a yard full of dandelions I see a wine orchard. Black locust blossoms also make a fine wine. LOL

Dandelion Wine

3 qts dandelion flowers
1 lb white raisins
1 gallon water
3 lbs granulated sugar
2 lemons
1 orange
yeast and nutrient

Pick the flowers just before starting, so they're fresh. You do not need to pick the petals off the flower heads, but the heads should be trimmed of any stalk. Put the flowers in a large bowl. Set aside 1 pint of water and bring the remainder to a boil. Pour the boiling water over the dandelion flowers and cover tightly with cloth or plastic wrap. Leave for two days, stirring twice daily. Do not exceed this time. Pour flowers and water in large pot and bring to a low boil. Add the sugar and the peels (peel thinly and avoid any of the white pith) of the lemons and orange. Boil for one hour, then pour into a crock or plastic pail. Add the juice and pulp of the lemons and orange. Allow to stand until cool (70-75 degrees F.). Add yeast and yeast nutrient, cover, and put in a warm place for three days. Strain and pour into a secondary fermentation vessel (bottle or jug). Add the raisins and fit a fermentation trap to the vessel. Leave until fermentation ceases completely, then rack and add the reserved pint of water and whatever else is required to top up. Refit the airlock and set aside until clear. Rack and bottle. This wine must age six months in the bottle before tasting, but will improve remarkably if allowed a year.

No it just tastes like **** !

The wine idea sounds good but if I was go to that effort, I would make beer. But feel free to visit and pick all the weeds that you want. The dandelions here get stronger each year. Just before the first snowfall here, I had two pop up in the yard and it was cold as hell. Mutant weed?

absnj - 2/2/2012 at 07:57 PM

The Best green?

Hardly... I think spinach deserves the award for that. It has SO much more iron, and goes MUCH better with bacon. Lettuce is just plain and boring.

But you are all entitled to your opinions.

For a while my Wife was putting spinach in everything, she would tell the kids and I that you can't taste it and its' healthy. Our response was "but everything's green".

Great part is I know enough folks who are into making it, and small kids love picking the flowers, er I mean ingredients. I made beer last weekend!

Mmmmm, wine and leafy greens.

dougrhon - 2/2/2012 at 08:45 PM

In terms of lettuce I have to go with iceberg. I realize it's lowbrow compared to the fancier lettuces like rugala but those taste like I'm eating the leaves off the plants in my backyard and I don't like that.

spacemonkey - 2/2/2012 at 09:47 PM

I like lettuce wrapped around a double decker hamburger.
no bread.

midnghtrdr69 - 2/2/2012 at 10:09 PM

Personally, to eat it, gotta be iceberg. Ok to put some purple in it. Some romaine, but not too crazy about it unless I have Honey Mustard.

Professionally, spinach...when your friend calll, as he did last week and his pt/inr was 7.1 'cause he drank cold beer with his coumadin...I had him eating spinach by the tons...lotsa vit K (and iron)

Are you fighting with yourself again? You know you ALWAYS lose those arguments.

dougrhon - 2/3/2012 at 03:57 AM

You know what's good? That Chinese dish where they give you this chopped beef thing and you wrap it in lettuce?

Gregallmanfan - 2/3/2012 at 05:06 AM

The best thing lettuce is good for is a reason to eat blue cheese dressing, but Buffalo wings are even better, so why bother?
