I hope to see all my Georgia friends at Chips in Winder on Saturday, June 19th when Lee Roy will be performing there...

I'm a big fan. Lee Roy's one of the most tasteful slide players on the planet. I wish he would come around here sometime.

I've been listening to Lee Roy for years. Finally got to see him last year when he opened for Dickey at Westbury Music Fair...WOW! Sorry I missed him at the Beacon this year, he doesn't come to NY too often. Definetly one of the best slide players out there. Go see him if you get the chance, you won't be sorry.

I recently attended the Jimmy Nalls benefit in Nashville. Among the many great musical moments was a blistering version of "Dimples" by Lee Roy and Jack Pearson. I hope that someone will release some tapes of this, cause it is worth repeated listenings. Maybe those two should work together a little more often.

I had never even HEARD of Lee Roy until recently, but he was the undisputed high point of a show I saw recently. There were two other bands on the bill, who I won't name because I don't want to piss anyone off I like both of them, but they didn't play their best shows that night. Lee Roy was the star of the show, that TONE! Definitely the real thing. Jimmy Hall played a couple of songs with him and they were some hot, hot jams!

Rob, I honestly think Lee Roy has the best slide tone I've ever heard. He plays right into the amp, no effects. Last I heard he was using a Fender Bassman. I need to get one! His tone is amazing.

I have a great Lee Roy show if anybody's interested in a B&P. 10/10/03 at GABBAFest (3 discs). Lee Roy plays a bunch of his new material, lots of blues, some standards, a few of his hits, covers a couple Brothers tunes and a Ry Cooder cover that will knock your socks off. Tons of special guests including Paul Hornsby, Ira Stanley and Dru Lombar. Reese Wynans on keys. It's more or less a big musical party with some of the best slide you will ever hear. PM me if interested.

Here's the setlist:

Disc 1:
1 Crossing Over
2 It Takes What it Takes
3 T-Bone Shuffle
4 Guardian Angel
5 Milkcow Blues
6 Linda Lou

Disc 2:
1 Born Under a Bad Sign
2 Holding My Own
3 I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine (Ry Cooder)
4 Statesboro Blues w/Dru Lombar
5 One Way Out w/Dru Lombar

Disk 3:
1 I'm Tore Down
2 John the Revelater
3 Heart's Desire
4 If the House is Rocking
5 On the Road

I had the opportunity to have an extended conversation with Lee Roy after Friday night's performance.....hopefully his tour schedule will allow him to be in attendance at GABBAfest again this year.....he would very much like for it to be!!

An ABB moment also happened Friday night at the show (we were at a country music bar) - I took my 2001 Hittin the Note magazine that featured Lee Roy and was hoping to get it autographed....of course, I have my postion of front row center in front of him...he sees the magazine and flashes a big smile....he then notices my "mushroom purse"...has me pass it to him and he places it on his guitar as he is playing....he could not believe that an ABB fan was in attendance....there were at least 4 of us....Rusty Barkley,Mike Federal, Jeff (Rusty's roadie) and myself!!

The encore of the night brought back wonderful Beacon memories - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down!!

Find a show listed on his website that is close to you and dont miss it!! A terrific slide player and great guy that loves ABB!!!!!!!!

He's the real deal!

I'm just itchin' to see another article in Hittin' the Note on Le Roy. I know he's got some good stuff cookin' and we'll write about it, I'm sure!

Don't miss this guy and don't miss getting the Gabba performance!

I'll vouch for Lee Roy in general - the Gabba show, in particular, is truly spectacular!

I've seen Lee Roy about 10 times the last 3 years....his tone is just awesome. It sings to me. He plays a Marshall, with an El Dorado emblem from a Caddy on it instead of the Marshall logo. He was in Macon last weekend, but I couldn't get there...damn the luck.

True Texas blues, from a man that loves Duane and Dickey...just about the perfect combination for my tastes...

I've never been into Marshalls but I may have to rethink that now. Lee Roy is my new tone guru.

What kind of guitars is he playing these days? He used to be a hardcore Strat man, but I see a lot of pictures of him with LP's lately. I think he might even have his own signature model.

Speaking of tone, he also has the best vibrato I've ever heard. Beautiful.

Lee Roy said that he grew up playing Les Paul's, but got away from them, and now, he is getting a little touch of arthritis in his hands, so he went back to his first love, the Les Paul. He has some beautiful, beautiful Les Pauls, too. Aye yi yi...

I've heard Lee Roy say that Dickey and Duane were such big influences on him, he had to stop listening so he could develop his own sound. Seems like it worked, he definitely has that! I just love this guys playing, singing, songwriting...

Barb,

I was telling Lee Roy about how I could hear Duane's influence in a couple of the songs that he played the night that I saw him....he said that it was not intentional but he guessed that it just came through....I think that it was Duane smiling down on him at those moments.....

Yes, he IS all those...a great singer, a great player, and a superb songwriter!!

Crowboy, I dont know anything better than hearing a good concert at an outside venue in Georgia or Carolinas in the summertime.....particularly our parks where you can take a blanket, nice picnic dinner, bottle of good wine and enjoy a great music concert. Our Pops in July is great...wonderful amphitheater at one of our malls!! And who doesnt enjoy an outside concert on the Fourth of July with the fireworks choregraphed to the music???

Summertime concerts are the BEST in Georgia and Carolinas....could also be all the NICE southern people attending that makes them so special!!

Our ABB or Lee Roy certainly makes for hot, steamy nights in the summer....in more ways than one!!
