I haven't really said much about this because I didn't want to jinx myself, but I have quit drinking as of September 12. I've made it 30 days as of today. Might as well fess up. I'm a sober man now.

A nice side benefit has been dropping weight. I hit an all time high of 265# recently and have generally been feeling fat, lethargic and unhealthy lately. I was 254# this morning and feel better already. I hope to drop another 34# or so. If I can get down to 220#, I think I'll be alright. I got a physical tomorrow, so we'll see what the doc has to say about my health.

It's not near as difficult as I thought it would be, although I have to admit, a cold beer would taste good! But, if I have one, I'll have six or eight. It was time....

Congratulations! You're doing your heart a great favor! Beer/alcohol - has more empty calories and drives your blood pressure up quicker than just about anything else! My blood pressure/heart rate/EKG/ energy level have all improved drastically since I gave the stuff up. I've shed a few pounds, too!

LOL Brock. I don't know if I'll ever be svelte again. I haven't been svelte in 25 years. If I posted a pic of me when I weighed 175, you wouldn't believe it was me.

Got luck Dave. And, don't downplaty your strength. As WC Fields once said "It's easy to swear off liquor; I've done it a thousand times." Staying off it is the hard part.

Dave, I think that's great! My wife and I both have a big history of alcoholism in our families, We have always made a pact with each other to call each other out on it if it ever became evident one or the other was headed for a problem. So far we've managed to be able to keep it to a social drink now and then. ( her father and brother, my age, both drank themselves into an early grave @ 58), my father gave up drink before I was born and gave up a 4 pack a day cig habit @ 56! I used to drink 4 or 5 beers a night, but now I seldom ever drink one unless it's a social occasion. As far as concerts etc go, I've laways been the one driving so I've been going sober or with a 1-2 beer limit forever! It amazes me to see people that pay the high prices for entertainment and have no idea what they have seen and heard the next day! I'll never understand how that's having a 'GOOD TIME"! You seem to be a man with strong family bond and a man of faith, so you'll find you have plenty of support and your real friends will be respectful of your decision!

Nice going Dave. I might be right behind you. I was so proud when I quit smoking (cigarettes), I know how you must feel. We have to think about our health if we want to be in good spirits for the 60th anniversary!!!

great news Dave keep on trucking

I stopped for four weeks last year and thankfully have cut back a bit. Actually only had two beers at last nights show. I was gonna get a third but new if I got buzzed I'd miss something amazing from Derek.

Good job Dave. I have considered the same many times myself, citing health and just feeling better as the main reasons.

I know exactly what you mean about one or two turning into six or eight. I have exactly the same issue. I can't have one or two. It's six-eight or more, or zero. The old joke was always - let's go out for 1 or 12.

I actually have no trouble on many days not touching anything alcoholic, and I don't miss it. And I have a much better following day.

Many times, I go several days without drinking anything, but I usually do (on average) 2-3 times a week. Being 45 is nothing like being 25 in that regard. The consecutive days of medium to heavier drinking are long gone. If I do have a heavier night, I'm done for at least the next two or three. The middle aged body just won't tolerate that kind of abuse anymore.

My problem is discipline and willpower to keep it respectable when I do drink. I rarely can have two and walk away. I have no problem with zero, but being that respectable "social" drinker is tough. It's like a shark with the smell of blood. After 1 or 2, it's like: What the hell, I'll have another, and another, and another....then I think I'm fun and funny, but likely just loud and stupid.

I love the two beer buzz. It takes the edge off and makes everyday worries seem less or insignificant, which would be fine if I'd end it right there. I used to always joke about a pill that would produce a day long two beer buzz type effect. Not drunk or even mildly tipsy, just mellow and easy going without worry or concern. (Maybe that's what prozak is?)

I also joke about being Irish, part of my heritage, yada-yada-yada.

Self control, will power, discipline should really be the goal.

Good for you Dave.
