As someone who is the primary caretaker for an ill elderly parent I absolutely find no humor in your attempt at sarcasm. IMO that's one of the most tasteless things you've ever posted. And everyone that liked your attempt at humor is just as crass.

It's sad that politics are so important to some of you that you have no concern for decency, this isn't directed completely at you Steve, but at everyone on this forum that thinks they can be as mean and vile as the Olberman's, limbaugh's and O' Reilly's of this world.

Before you start a thread maybe you should think about the possibility your title may offend someone that doesn't have a dog in the hunt. I wouldn't have opened this if the title had been anything else.

I wish Scott would move the College Football thread somewhere else so i wouldn't have to come into the WP at all.

Nothing to think about...it was a joke regarding the lies that the Right wingers are pushing that Obamas health care initiatives are going to include euthanasia of the elderly.

My 78 year old mother lives with me and is a registered nurse at a geriatric facility. She is stunned by the complete ignorance of the general population. Johnny Isakson Republican Senator of Georgia put this provision in the bill and has been a champion of the ability of people to be counseled on how to prepare for end of life. It is very complicated and many people do not understand what decisions have to be made and who can make them. We have a country full of old folks homes full of old folks where other than a life insurance policy nothing has been agreed to, no one has authority, brothers and sisters fight over how it should be handled, the elderly person is past the point of deciding if he/she stops breathing whether or not they want to be brought back to life and put on a breathing machine. The absolute worse thing a person can do to themselves or their families is to not make provisions and deal with this by knowing what may happen and what their options are.

This is a Republican provision and I think it is a good provision along with the majority of people who actually have had to go through this unprepared. My mother deals with this on a daily basis and it is criminal in my mind for anyone to try to turn this into a euthanasia issue. Personally I don't know how people who are spreading these lies can stand to get out bed in the morning, it is truly disheartening. I don't think Squatch's post even comes close to the level of depravity of those who are lieing about a provision of this importance.

I have to think those of us who have faced some of the end of life care decisions can fully appreciate the absurdity of the position the right wing is taking on this issue and I, for one, appreciate the dark humor of the thread title. Might as well just come out and tell it like the right is trying to paint it.

Well gosh, thats just how I feel when I hear the Conservatives lying to the public about whats going on. I mean, euthanasia for Gods sake! Wheres your outrage over the lies?

Like it or not, politics affects everyone and their families in some way.

If you are offended about this issue then thats good. You should be royally pissed in my opinion, but feel free to direct your disdain to the Right side of the aisle where these lies have originated. All I have done is illustrate them as they were intended to be viewed.

Obviously no thought was put into it. your politics are more important than the feelings of others. I thought you had mellowed some but as usual when I make assumptions about other people I am wrong again.

I'm sure you wouldn't have the balls to say it to my face.

BTW squatch this rumor wasn't spread by a right wing republican acording to CBS News

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/08/11/eveningnews/main5235034.shtml?tag =cbsnewsTwoColUpperPromoArea

(CBS) At protests and town hall meetings around the country accusations are flying about so-called "end-of-life care" for seniors on Medicare, reports CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson.

It's spelled out in "Section 1233" of the House Bill.

"What it says is, as a 74-year old man, if you develop cancer, we're pretty much gonna write you off," claimed one woman at a town hall meeting.

"Nobody 74 is going to be written off because they have cancer," said Sen. Arlen Specter. "That's a vicious, malicious untrue rumor."

It's a "rumor" that spread like fire after a July 16 radio interview with former Lt. Governor of New York Betsy McCaughey, a Democrat.

"The Congress would make it mandatory, absolutely required like every five years, people in Medicare have a required counseling session, that will tell them how to end their life sooner," McCaughey said in the interview.

Not true, according to Brooks Jackson of the consumer advocate group FactCheck.org.

"What the House bill does... is make end-of-life counseling - things like living wills, advance directives - makes that a covered expense under Medicare," Jackson said.

Section 1233 primarily offers Medicare patients "Advance Care Planning Consultation" every five years - sooner if they take a turn for the worse. Counselors would be trained by the government "about the goals and use of orders for life sustaining treatment," which are not specified in the bill.

Despite rumors, counseling would be voluntary, not forced. But health care professionals would be paid to provide it.

"There is something legitimately worth talking about here," Jackson said. "If you cover something under Medicare, you pay doctors to do it, they have a financial incentive to do it."

As for what advice patients would get from counselors, they'd hear about services like "hospice." They'd be encouraged to give "preferences" for "life sustaining treatment." That may include limiting "the intensity of medical intervention... if the patient is pulseless... or has serious cardiac or pulmonary problems."

Some worry susceptible seniors would be steered into ending their life to save money. One House committee addressed those fears by adding an amendment: It says the government will not pay organizations that "promote suicide, assisted suicide, or the act of hastening death."

If one study from Harvard is to be believed, the interests of all sides may actually dovetail. It found that cancer patients who had end-of-life counseling spent about $1,000 less in their final week of life, were more comfortable and lived just as long as those who chose more intensive care.

Sarah Palin did some damage with her death squad comment. Now they can move to the extreme and use terms like "unplugging grandma" and make fun of it. There's some middle ground that's being ignored as a result.

The worry should be over the hip replacement and whether the money should be spent to keep somebody out of a wheelchair for a few years. Obama used this example with his own grandmother and admitted some tough choices would have to be made in a case like that.

You don't remember correctly....I said nothing about pencils or soap. I did stock up on canned goods because at the time the trucks around here were slowing down deliveries and there were some shortages in the area. I also took enough money out of the bank to last for a couple of months in case any of the banks around here closed. I may be arrogant, but I'm not a hypocrite.

Spare me this crap. Im deeply offended that ANYONE would suggest that the pending health care legislation will include killing off old people. Why are you more mad at me for discussing that, rather than the people who perpetuate the lies? Thats the real question. The lies have no purpose other than to derail any rational discussion at the governmental level. Some here are even concerned (so concerned!) that Obama isnt addressing the issue of putting grandma down like a dog. When Obama has to address ridiculous rhetoric it takes away from the actual goals of getting meaningful healthcare legislation passed.

Betsy McCaughey is listed as both a Democrat and Republican (Wiki). She is also described as a "conservative health expert". Considering that she is a current serving member of the Hudson Institute, which is a conservative think tank, I would say she is no more a Democrat than the man on the moon, or more likely, she is a Democrat when she needs to be.

As for the rumors, Rush Limbaugh is probably the main person where this is coming from as he seems to be pushing it the hardest.

Yeah, but things like that take a back seat to wondering if you are going to be euthanized. Thats what the plan was about and thats why they are repeating that horrible bunch of shiat. They dont want a health care plan and they damn sure dont want a Democrat to come across with the goods.

Just a slight correction, she isnt a Democrat per se...she is whatever she wants to be at the time (was Republican, then went Democrat to get votes). If you read about her political career, this is evident. If you look at where she is now, she is most certainly Conservative. Past that, Limbaugh and other RW mouthpieces are screaming about this issue and how the old folks are going to be put down. Its shameful, bullshiat lies FROM THE RIGHT. Heck, do a search for "death panel" and see what Im saying is true.

I don't think killing your Mom is a funny joke. Obviously you do.

I have my own situation with my Mom right now I don't care to see you sarcastic tasteless Bullsh!t. It struck a nerve with me.

As far as who that woman in the news story is, I don't know who she is, she's just another lying POS and all of them in both party's are as far as I'm concerned. I don't spend 24 hours a day on political blogs. I have other interests, college football, motorsports music (imagine that someone with an interest in music at a music website WHAT a novel idea!)
