I love when they do these tech things with Derek. Guitar into amp. Over pretty quick.

Some guys plug into the space station to play.

Not often that the bassist has the most toys.

That was very cool. I'm no musician but I watched it anyway and learned some stuff.

Interesting to learn that he got his main guitar from Galladrielle... I always thought it was a gift from Dickey... good stuff

Thanks for sharing.....Most intriguing to me is the fact that he doesn't use monitors or an ear piece. The discussion of finding the right sonic space is quite fascinating too.

I don't understand why he doesn't have a monitor. Wouldn't it help him hear the whole band better?

I thought the same but then considered that maybe it actually forces him to listen "better" or "differently" so to speak and thus allows him to hear a more true sound. Almost as if it's more organic and more close to what we the audience hear...

Not sure I articulated that very well..

No, I know what you mean.

I play in a measly 5 piece band. All of our amps and even the drum kit are Mac's and run through the PA, which then runs through the monitors so we can each better hear what the whole band sounds like. The sax player and I are on one side of the drummer, the bassist and other guitarist in the other side. The monitor helps me hear the guys farthest away, rather than just hearing the closest amp.

Admittedly, it helps with singing the most. It lets you hear your own voice so you don't feel compelled to yell. Maybe a non-singer needs it less. Heck, whatever Derek is doing works just fine!!

I used to go to an open jam at a bar where people rotate in and out for a few songs each, sharing the same amp. One guy would bring his whole pedal, we weren't sure if he was playing the guitar or the pedals. Of course his "overdrive" pedal was real popular.
