I am a huge fan of Allen's work with early Gov't Mule and ABB stuff. I have respect for the man musically, but I personally think it was somthing stronger then a bong hit that killed him. I think it was something like Cocaine.

The above link is to a PDF version of an article in Relix in Feb/March 2005 entitled The New School of Gov't Mule by Jaan Uhelszki with photos by Marina Chavez. Andy had joined the band full time in October 2003 so the guys had been together for about a year and a half by the time the article came out. In the article Matt talks about some of the issues facing Allen at the time of his death.

I don't think it matters what the cause of his death was "officially." Matt and Warren tried to help Allen. From all I've heard, Allen was a head strong person and it probably wasn't easy to tell him he HAD to do anything.

Anyway, I think Matt was very forthcoming about the situation.

I also have a copy of the text of the article on the yahoo site in the Files, Interview/Press folder.

It doesn't matter what killed Allen......It only matters that he is gone and sorely missed by many.

I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with his father Doug a few years ago. Being a bass player myself, he took a bit of a shine to me. I can tell you first hand that you will never meet a finer gentleman than Mr. Woody is. Nobody misses Allen more than his father does. Doug says his son died because of a heart attack. What brought that on is speculative and irrelevant. Lets show some respect for Doug Woody. He deserves it! If he says a heart attack killed his son, that's good enough for me. It should be for the rest of you as well.

I agree Tom. I have Doug's 2001 ABB shirt that he wore at a tribute to Allen show. On the front of the shirt is a picture of NYC with Doug's signature on the WTC pre 9/11. I also have his VIP pass from that show. It was an honor to have met Allen, and I still miss him deeply.

Doesn't matter how he died. It still doesn't take away from the fact that he was the baddest effn bass player there was/is........IMHO

tuinals and narcotic combo greg says in his book(p.171).....I always wondered about it..i think it is good greg can talk about it now. He says he loved Woody, that he had a great sense of humor...and if woodys cause of death could save one person from doing the same combo then it should be brought to light...

I read that in Gregg's book too Shane-o. In another book it was claimed that Allen Woody died of a heroin overdose so if what Gregg wrote is true I'm guessing he took heroin an opiate with a benzo.

Yes A LOT of people have died this way including the actor Heath Ledger. I have a friend who would do this drug combination and thankfully she never died, and she is now sober and has been for close to two decades now.

Tuinal is no longer made.

I'll miss Allen Woody's bass playing and I'm glad I got a chance to see him live with the mule.

He died of a heroin overdose. But this is old news and his dope use effected his playing towards the end of his life. Rest in peace Allen.
