Ron Tomasello (aka Catman Blues, aka goldtop on this site) put on an exhilarating set of downhome Mississippi Blues at JJ's Lounge last Friday night here in the Bay area. A one man show which drew a nice early set (7:00-8:30) crowd of maybe 30 into JJ's, quite impressive considering the time slot. And why not? Would it be worth your time to get down to a club by 7:00 PM to hear some great down and dirty acoustic picking and slide on both acoustic guitar and dobro? Ron can sing as well and his voice perfectly suits the material. After an hour or so Ron said into the mike that he was running out of material. So he proceeds to pull Come On In My Kitchen, Pony Boy and Little Martha out of his bag, all sterling renditions. If this is what the guy comes up with when he is desperate for material, well, what can I say other than Ron has a huge repertoire of licks up his sleeve. FYI the first pic is of Ron with his drummer Andrew Tuckman. The last one is of Chris Cain (left) and his band, who followed Ron. I only caught a couple of songs by Chris and had to leave.

SETLIST:
She Caught The Katy
Automobile Blues
4 Till Late
In The Jailhouse
Lot To Laugh
Keep It To Yourself
Down In The Hole
Brokedown Engine
What's That Taste Like Gravy
Take Out Some Insurance
Corrina
Fat Cat Blues
T-Bone Shuffle
Help Me
Somebody's Blues
Dust My Broom
Catman Blues

SET 2
Come On In My Kitchen
Pony Boy
Little Martha
I Got A Mind To Give Up Living
I Know What Love Is All About
Pickup The Receiver
Move Up To The Country

I love acoustic blues! This would have been a great show to see. Goldtop looks very cool - wish I could have been there. And I also love Chris Cain - IMHO he's a world class guitar player - don't see the pic of him, though.

Now I see the pic! I must have posted too soon. Thanks.

Chris is an INCREDIBLE player. I had to work at 6:30 AM or I would have stayed. I've only been listening to Chris for 25 years!! Back in the 80's he used to blow the walls off of this same club just about every Friday and Saturday night.

I've only seen him live once - I live in Iowa. I talked to him for a little while and bought 3 of his cd's. He was a very nice, humorous and gracious man. Very cool - enjoy his music as often as you can.

Would you consider playing a gig at Blues on Grand in Des Moines, IA? I'd make the trip and so would a few others. Seriously.

It works for me. I love the blues - acoustic or electric. Just play them....that's all.

I don't have any pull with anyone there, but I can make a suggestion.
