Rock star Ted Nugent, a 1970s guitar hero for hits including "Cat Scratch Fever," has recently created a successful second career as an advocate for hunting and outdoor ethics.

His television show, "Spirit of the Wild," is a four-time "Golden Moose" award winner on the Outdoor Channel. He has used his celebrity status to help promote better pay and working conditions for California game wardens, and consistently rails against poachers and other wildlife criminals.

So it was with a double take of disbelief that two California game wardens sat down in February to watch the show, and witnessed Nugent allegedly violate several California hunting laws.

The Feb. 9 episode showed Nugent killing a young male deer with bow and arrow near the El Dorado County town of Somerset.

The wardens were alarmed because the footage appeared to show Nugent killing a "spike" buck, or one whose antlers have not yet grown long enough to fork. Killing such a young deer is illegal in California.

It also appeared to show the deer feeding on a powdery material spread on the ground before it was shot.

The Department of Fish and Game launched an investigation, spokesman Patrick Foy said, which later revealed this material to be a commercial deer bait. It is illegal in California to hunt with bait.

"We looked at it and we just shook our heads, saying 'I can't believe he actually aired this episode,' " Foy said. "We were all really disappointed to see this happen with a guy who is a representative of hunters."

Nugent was later charged with 11 misdemeanors related to events that unfolded on his own television show, Foy said.

On Friday, following a plea deal with the Yuba County district attorney, Nugent pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in Yuba Superior Court: illegally baiting a deer, and failing to have a deer tag signed by a government official after a kill.

Nugent did not appear in court. He was represented by Yuba City attorney Jack Kopp, who did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. The 61-year-old rocker, who lives in China Springs, Texas, was penalized with a $1,750 fine.

Obviously, the California Department of Fish and Game is rife with liberals with an agenda.

LOL! That's some funny chit. Probably didn't help Nugent to admit that he was never a big Jerry Garcia fan.

Not that I support Nugent's disregard for CA. regulations, but it is sometimes difficult to see those spike antlers, because they're between the rather large ears that whitetail deer have. I got one with a bow back in '85, and I thought it was a doe. This was in NYS, and it wasn't illegal then. I believe I had a doe permit for the area, anyways.

No law against taking a spike in NY.

Most Quality Deer Management areas (QDM's) require hunters to only harvest does and the bucks' antlers must extend beyond the ears.

We did the QDM program for years and it resulted in some nice trophy animals.

Opening day about 7 years ago.

A pair of ten pointers for us.

Mine weighed over 200 lbs. dressed.

Idaho does not allow baiting either good for CA.... and i am glad he got busted for it this bait crap you see on TV behind fences is NOT what our young outdoors girls and boys need to see represented as hunting, we need quality shows that teach woods skills not sitting in a tree stand on your A$$... most of these TV heros are fat and lazy.... and all they emphasize is the size of the rack and filling your tag you very rarely see them talk about the good food value and the consequences of taking a life... sick em Cali...

If he wanted to be a real hunter, he would hunt things that would fight back. Anyone can sit in a tree stand or blind and bait a deer. Manly man.

Hats off to the California Fish & Game men for doing a great job and helping to protect our state.

I'm not going to waste any bandwidth talking about Teddy boy, but will say I have nothing but respect for the state game wardens who work the two state parks in our county. I've talked with many of them. They live here, too, and they appreciate the wonderful jobs they have, and do them very well, IMO. And my heroes are the CalFire men & women, and the local fire departments. They fight the fires that threaten property and homes every year. There was a house fire up in the mountains a few weeks ago, and I saw trucks from our own fire department, plus CalFire, plus trucks from 4 or 5 other nearby towns go by. They don't play with fire around here. When they are actively fighting a fire, of which there were 3 last year, I think, the whole community rallies around them to help feed them and help them in any way we can. They really are our heroes. There were lots of hand painted signs in people's yards thanking them after the big fires last summer. They came from all over the state.

The onus is on him to know the rules of the state he is hunting in, what a stupid ass. Baiting is legal in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Originally from MI, but didn't he buy a ranch in Crawford, TX near G.W. Bush?

Uncle Ted's note from his web site. He is making no excuses and apologiizes. We all make mistakes.
Still love his tunes and playing not matter what he does!

From Ted Nugent:
To my Fellow Outdoorsmen.... You may have read the news that I pled no contest to two misdemeanor game violations. I should have been better informed, more aware and I take full responsibility. The honorable hunting lifestyle is my deepest passion.

Not that I know anything about hunting but, I fail to see how laying out bait, legal or otherwise could be deemed "honourable hunting"

I don't think that he was saying what he did was honorable. I think he was saying that he did what he did out of ignorance of the law (take that for what it's worth). But that he now knows that he was wrong(less than honorable) and accepts responsibility for his actions. That the honorable lifestyle is his passion and would never knowingly practice dishonorable hunting techniques...... or he could just be full of crap….

i saw a bunch of deer in the spring..a nice big buck going down the trail off my driveway..it's one of the reason i live where i do..i think baiting is absurd..it's not right..if someone wants to shoot a deer that's fine but i'd rather shoot it with a 35mm camera

as for ted i'll listen to him i guess..not by choice..classic rock radio
