As you know, today is the 9th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. It has been 9 years since the attacks took place back in 2001. I still remember being at work as a stocker at Napa Auto Parts in Worth, IL starting my day. It was around 8:00 AM that day when one of the delivery drivers came into the store and said, "A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center." We then turned on the radios we had in the store and listened to the news coverage and also had a TV and watched all the footage of the attacks as they happened. It was a very sad day in American history. Where were you on this date when it all happened?

Sleeping. I worked late the night before, rolled into bed about 5am. I had no clue until I turned on the radio heading back into work that afternoon.

At work. Back then i had an office job with the national Dutch telecommunication company (KPN). We either heard from a co-worker or from a nearby radio but at first we didn't pay much attention to it. The first news was that a small airplane hit the WTC. So i first thought of something like a Cesna, little damage and little personal loss. I think the follow-up news was that one of the towers was on fire. But everything changed when the news came in it was a big commercial plane and around that same time the horrorful news came in that the second tower just was hit as well. Some people located a TV set that was stored somewhere for special (sport) ocassions. When everybody saw those first images of the huge smoke clouds from the towers and the first amateur footage started to show up everyone was fixed on that tv set and little to no work was done. This was something big and everybody was horriefied and speculated. It was already clear that could only be a terrorist attack of unseen proportions. When more news came in about
the Pentagon, the fourth plane and a false rumour that the Capitol in Washington DC was on fire as well we started to get the bizarre impression the US / the World was at war.
All those images, especially of those poor souls jumping to escape the raging fire, were something i will never forget. For days and days this was the only conversations going on. The day afterward my (then) little son Rory had his birthday party and everybody was only talking about 9/11 and it's consequences. So in the following year my son asked me "I hope this year everybody is not only talking about those burning towers again". But half way his party the inevitable "can you believe it's one year ago already!" remark came up and it was a big topic again.

I have lived right outside of New York City all my life except for four years when I worked in Washington DC in the field of journalism.
It was a dark day being woken up by a photographer I worked with telling me to turn on the TV. One building had been hit. I sat on my coffee table for the next hour making phone calls, personal and business (the subject was the same). Then the second building was hit and I was off to the races for the next week.
You could see the Pentagon burning from the roof of my apartment building. Early the next morning, I was on a train to NY bringing unprocessed film of this horrific event to my home office at Newsweek in New York. The sky over the entire city was filled with yellow dust, downtown was on fire. I was running on automatic. It was too surreal to process.

I was at work listening to Howard Stern. They may have the first to report what happened. At the the time they heard and felt the impact of the 1st plane and a staffer went to a window and shouted the WTC is on fire and shortly after the other plane hit.

I was outside of Richmond, VA, and isolated in my classroom with my sixth-graders and didn't learn of these horrifying events until about 10:30 a.m.

It was also an extremely difficult period for me because my grandmother was dying at this time (she passed on 9/14), so I had all of her medical and life decisions to make then, too.

I was at a child's funeral. Another coastie's wife delivered a still-born and my wife and I were on our way to the church for the service. I, along with about fifteen more Coast Guardsmen, were in full dress uniform that morning. Darcie wanted a bottle of water so I pulled off the freeway. As I waited for her to get back in the car, I turned the radio on and heard that a plane had hit the WTC. I actually surfed the radio after hearing that. When the scan came back to the news station they said there had been another plane collision at the WTC. I left it on. There was a report that several cars had exploded in front of the State Department in Washington. Immediately following the next plane hit the Pentagon. I was immediately overcome with a tremendous sense of dread.

By the time we sat down in the church I was with other Coast Guardsmen. After approximately fifteen minutes, we were ordered back to station. I was told to go home and pack all of my uniforms and wait for another phone call to come to work. After about two hours of not getting the call I left anyway.

Traveling in to Detroit on I-96, all traffic was outbound. I was literally the only person on the eastbound side. In front of the Renaissance Center, the GM world HQ, a SWAT team member with his face covered ran out in front of my car with an automatic weapon pointed at me. Luckily I was in uniform, I held my unit hat up for him to see it, and without lowering his weapon, he waived me past him.

The streets were completely empty. I ran every red light to get to the station faster. Upon arrival, I was briefed on my duties that would comprise my entire life for the next solid three and a half weeks. Four hours of communications watch, eight hours of boat patrols, four hours back at the station doing roving security or roof top security, then eight hours sleep.

Not without incident, this day defined my entire adult life. All of my careers have been a direct result of this tragedy. Sometimes I feel guilty about that. Most of the time I am proud of it. That's the problem. A group of extremists have changed history, but also each of us personally, no matter how directly you may have been involved with the initial incidents.

I wish all of you a moment of peace today. No matter what your perspective is about the direction that we have been steered in the past nine years, we are brothers and sisters who live in the most free country in the world. Amen.

I was at work. Word spread quickly, I went to a conference room that had a TV.

When I saw the 2nd plane hit the tower, I thought it was a replay of the 1st, I couldn't believe what was happening.

Our company allowed folks to leave early that day. I immediately went to my kids elementary school and picked them up early. I hugged them and told them I love them.

We went home.

I was in my company truck on a jobsite, resurfacing streets in a neighborhood in North Augusta, SC. I was listening to The Big Show and they were relaying the events on air as they unfolded and received news reports. First came word of the twin towers, then the Pentagon and the PA crash. Like Slowhand6 said, I was overcome with dread. I thought to myself, "We're under attack!" I wanted to leave work, go get my kids out of school and go home and lock the doors. When it became evident that my boss had no intentions of suspending work for the rest of the day, I had to wait until we were done. I kept the radio on for updates. It was hard to concentrate on work.

I was at work at John J. McMullen, Asso office a mile down 395 from the Pentagon. Btw, JJMA's corporate headquarters was located in World Trade Center and one of my bosses was actually on the phone with one of the VPs when the plane hit.

One strange reoccurrence, until the last year or so, I would look at a clock at exactly 9:11 everyday. This was done unintentionally but just happened regardless of where I was. A daily reminder to never forget!

The Horror... The Horror of it all..

My day began like most... driving my 35 mile ride into Macy's..on L.I. not in NYC from that point it would be another 40 or so miles... to the Herald Square Macy's

I had my CD player on, it was a glorious Sept morning... I remember most, that the sky was just so Beautiful a Blue I had not seen ... just breathtaking... I was happy...

I got into work at 9:20am... it is a long walk from on the second floor employee entrance to the first floor to my counter... the lights are not on and it was quiet..not many employees around yet...
Then I hear a friend associate coming from the escalator.. Oh My God... Oh My GOD.... OH MY GOD.. she is screaming now... I run to where she is thinking something had happened to her... I saw her ashen face... WHAT ???? A plane crashed into the WTC... I said OH No.. those little Cessna's ( sp ) were always flying around them.. in fact when you were in the Windows of the World or on observations floors you could look down on them as they flew around..But NO NO.. to our horror.. it was a commercial jet liner... OMG..... we ran down to Radio shack as soon as the doors were open.... they had huge TVs all over... we watched in complete SHOCK and Disbelieve as another Jet Liner came around and tore into the second Bldg.... NO WORDS.. only gasps and cries .....

I was watching the devil in his finest hour... although he has had many... this display was just to much to bear..... : (

Can we ever really forget.... I know since the time it has happened up until today... People were or seemed to be slowing down and had more compassion and a smile to give, some words about the events.. Now it seems a nuisance to think about for some, Everyone is in a hurry again, angry again or so it seems, I guess or that is the impression I get... Time heals outside wounds.. the ones deep on the heart really never mend.... maybe that is how we protect ourselves...

My thoughts and deep sympathies are with the families who lost loved ones that day and to any who are suffering from the scars we can not see....

At home watching on TV in dis-belief...when i 1st turned on the TV & saw the 1st plane had hit....I thought it was a movie...I changed the channel a few times & realized it was real...Then i thought about one of my closest friends who is an Officer on the Port Authority & was worried he was there..& he was......fortunately,he made it through, but several of his Brothers did not. We talk often, but i always call him on 9/11 just to thank him for what he & his Brothers did & do everyday...

I was at work when this happened. We have TV's in all the operatories for the patients to be entertained during procedures and when this happened we all cried.... Our nation cried and mourned as it all became clear as to what went down...

My office is International and I work with many cultures. One Egyptian girl who is a Christian american and has been here for 20 yrs was trapped in the Middle East when this happened. She hadn't been to see her parents in over 13 years and had the trip planned for months. She arrived about 4 days prior to 911 and when this went down she feared she would never get back home. Two children here and as the celebration grew on the streets her worried mind began to shutter... how can these Muslims be so cruel??? She became very hostile to people chanting and voiced it but that fell on deaf ears. It was horrific and unfathomable to say the least. She made it home three weeks later with a very bruised heart...

We all pray for the family of victims...

I was working for United Technologies in San Jose. They made a part of the booster stage rocket and we were a solid propellant manufactuer. I was a software engineer and I was working from home that morning. Since we were a defence contactor I felt it was better to stay home that day since we didn't really know what was going on. I felt being around a bunch explosives was not where I wanted to be that day

My Fiancee at the time lived in Gilbert Az. Living in San Diego I was all too familiar with the drive home after a long weekend in the desert heat. Cheri had a TV in the bedroom which was hidden in a cabinet and was hardly ever used. For some reason that morning as she rolled over and awakened she said to me .."For some reason I feel like I should turn on the TV"...No worries I thought...it surprised me only because it was out of the norm, not part of our routine...I don't recall the exact time, only that it was early, because Cheri would be prepping for work and I ...I was awake. The TV warms up, comes on...and the first visual we see is the second plane hitting the tower LIVE...The camera angle changes and we see the other tower already in flames...On the drive home across the desert, the route was changed from the 8 west to some circuitous back road that led us around some Military/Gov't site in the Laguna Mtns.

"For some reason I feel like I should turn on the TV"

Still sends a chill down my spine

I was in the car on the way to school when I heard it on the radio. They even talked about it at school that day. It was definitely very tragic.

the TV was on at home with the sound down.

Just looked at it for a while, wondering what movie they were making, and how they did that.

Later in the day, after watching coverage for a couple of hours, remember how eerie it was seeing no planes in the sky.

That morning, I was cleaning out my desk at New Milford High School as I was leaving my job of 8 years to go work at Wilton High School. We had just gotten computers in the classrooms that year, and a co-worker stopped in and said, "You won't believe this - there's been a terrible accident. An airplane actually crashed into the World Trade Center." By the time I got the image up on my computer, the 2nd had hit, and the word was out that it was no accident.

There were immediate rumors flying around, including one that Wall Street was being bombed. The woman who was replacing me had a daughter who worked there, so this poor woman was really losing it. In a daze, I packed my boxes and got into my car to drive an hour to my new job. On the ride there, I heard many different news reports, and plenty of people on the radio were losing it also. Time slowed down as in a nightmare. I had no cellphone back then, so I could not contact my wife, who was at home with our 2-month-old daughter.

I arrived at my new job just as they had released the students early to go home to their families. I was walking into the building, one person entering against a tide of 1200 scared teens exiting, all of us feeling utterly lost.

I was right across the street in World Financial 3. Saw both planes hit. Complete nightmare. I was less than 10 blocks away when the first tower went down.
