When my dearest friend Bill Ector passed, his family asked if I would adopt Billís cat Marley. I was happy to do so and not only have I bonded with Marley, so has my son Ronnie.

Yesterday Marley was attacked by two dogs while in his own yard. I was at work, but a neighbor heard the ruckus and saw the fight. She chased off the dogs and took Marley to a veterinary hospital.

Today I am devastated -- I just got back from visiting Marley and he is in bad shape. His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, but he is in still in shock and is suffering great pain. He was glad to see me, but he could only make the tiniest meows and feebly move his front paws.

He was pretty chewed up on his hindquarters and he cannot move his left hind leg. The vet says he does not respond to stimulus on that leg and there may be nerve damage. They have him hooked up to IV fluids, antibiotics and pain medicine and will need to keep him till at least through the weekend to determine if heíll be able to regain use of his leg.

Please keep Marley in your thoughts and prayers -- not only is he a wonderful cat, he is also a link to my departed brother, Bill.

Sorry to hear about Marley, Hop.

God, this kind of thing really irks me. How could people just let their dogs run wild? (Assuming these dogs belong to someone...)

The law needs to enforce leash laws. As a four cat family, if I saw a dog in my yard viciously attacking one of my cats, you'd hear about it on the news because I will shoot the dog in my yard and not blink an eye. And I have a dog, too. The cats keep it in line.

Those dogs belong to the nicest, sweetest guy in the entire neighborhood. He has spent more than $1,000 fortifying his fence to make sure the dogs can't escape from his backyard.

But yesterday while he was at work, his next-door neighbor's two little girls came by after school to play with his dogs -- their parents won't let them have a pet of their own -- but they were careless and left the gate open.

Worse, one of those two dogs has attacked Marley twice before. One time a workman left the gate open and another time she slipped the leash while being walked. Neither time was Marley seriously hurt -- in fact, he cut that dog's face to ribbons the last time.

But Marley couldn't handle two dogs at once, apparently.

Hate to hear about Marley. We've got four and I worry about something like that happening to one of them.
Dave, I'm with you...a dog gets in my yard after one of my cats...he's gonna wish that deal never went down.
Prayers sent for Marley. Vets today can do some wonderful things.

That sucks! Healing vibes going out to Marley! Hopefully the nerve damage is minimal and Marley returns to his former self.

So sorry to hear about Marley, Ron. God bless you for giving him a loving home when Bill passed. The little furry one will be in my prayers. He's gonna make it; just gonna take time.

My cats don't go outside. They're happy with sitting on the windowsill and watching the world go by (I call it Kitty TV). Too many cars, coons, dogs and people with bad intent.

Bill is watching over his baby. God bless your neighbor.

Ronnie and I visited Marley this afternoon and he seems a little better. The vet said he stood up briefly earlier today, so maybe his leg is beginning to heal. He still is very feeble and doped up on pain medication. We should have a better prognosis by Monday.

Go Marley!

Thats horrible to hear Hophead, i couldnt imagine seeing my cats in pain. Im with Dave on this...just saying. I dont advocate abuse towards animals but pets are like family members and you dont want to see family members hurting. Best wishes to your dear cat, Marley!

Marley will still be able to get around on 3 if he has to. He's a strong little furball.

Wishing him a quick recovery and peace to his Stepdad. I can't imagine your pain watching this special baby suffer. He'll be OK. I can sort of feel it.

Hoping nothing but the best for Marley...sending positve vibes.

My wife and I have 2 cats and a big stocky male German Shepard who is fearless except when it comes to his two housemates. They really keep him in line and he knows what he can and can't get away with...lol !

I love dogs and cats and I'll be keeping Marley in my thoughts...

Thanks, everyone! I'll find out tomorrow if Marley is ready to come home. Here's another image. Notice the spot of black pigment on the center of his lower lip that makes it look like he's wearing a Kabuki mask ...
