Here's a complete transcription of my 1981 interview with Gregg Allman. Gregg was very forthcoming, and we talked at length about his brother Duane.

http://jasobrecht.com/gregg-allman-interview-brother-duane/

On my Jas Obrecht Music Blog, you'll also find interviews with three of the people Gregg mentions -- Duane's best friend Jim Shepley, Houserockers bandleader Bob Greenlee, and singer Floyd Miles.

Stay tuned -- Lots more Duane to come!

Well Jas since it worked so well in the Jerry interview ... Could you please share some of your thoughts and impressions of Gregg Allman from your interview with him? So many of us will never get the opportunity to talk to our heroes and ask them questions. I just find the background stuff and the little things as fascinating as the topics covered. I'm sorry I've just got an enquiring "purient" mind. I know Gregg can be a very different person depending on the circumstances i.e. the guy accepting the honor of being inducted into the RnR HOF and the funny engaging fellow that was on the short lived Graham Nash show on TV awhile back. Anyway as always thanks for posting and I look forward to your response.

Transcribing the tape yesterday conjured powerful emotions in me, which doesn't often happen, especially 29 years after an interview. Gregg's love for Duane is so evident in his voice -- not only with what he said, but how he said it and the way he'd pause or speak very quietly during certain parts. It was not an easy interview for him, and I'm grateful he was so honest about his feelings.

Hey Jas...first and foremost, Thank You very much for putting all of this fantastic history out there for all of us!...Certainly excellent fuel for the imagination...

Question... I read in the above post that you had been "Transcribing the tape"...Are the same (for lack of a better term at this moment) "Copyrights" attached to the recording as to the written transcription that is read by the public in magazine form?

Thanks for all you do

In the same interview, Gregg says that his Dad died because he was shot in the Korean War, and later that he was killed by a hitchhiker? So which was it? Maybe his Dad was shot in the Korean War but didnt' die, and later was killed by a hitchhiker?

Nice to hear that you guys kept that issue. Of everything I wrote during those 20 years at Guitar Player, that Duane Allman cover story is my all-time favorite.

Willis Allman was killed on December 26, 1949. The US didn't get involved in the Korean conflict until June of 1950. The hitchhiker story is factual.
