For me, I think "The Promise" is almost as good as "Born To Run."

Well, i have only recently started buying Bruce Springsteen cds. Had that live boxset on vinyl but picked up some stuff on cd in the last few months. Bought the "Born To Run" anniversary boxset and that Live in Dublin 2cd/dvd. 2 weeks ago i bought a boxset with his first 7 studio albums and i still have to listen to a lot of stuff. Except for his singles i only knew most of his album tracks in the live version of that previously mentioned boxset.
So my favorite album is subject to change but i really digged "Nebraska" a lot. The lyrics and vibe has similarities to Steve Earle's work. I really dig Steve Earle.

1. The Promise
2. Magic
3. Born in the USA
4. The River
5. Darkness on the Edge of Town

I really really like the soundtract to his last to E Street Band DVDs, "London Calling" and "Live in Barcelona"

Also the "Sessions Band Live in Dublin" has some really great performances.

I don't consider The Promise as an album of outtakes. It was recorded during the time that Bruce could not release an album due to legal issues. If he would have been able to release an album then, we would have had something like The Promise, which would have changed the Darkness On The Edge Of Town album. Read the book in the box set.

The Promise is a great album, not a collection of outtakes.

when he was on conan he said it was an album of tunes he felt didn't fit on darkness or showed too much of the music that influenced them.

Have seen Bruce a lot more than the ABB, and I'm a huge fan. Easily the best live performer to have ever been on a stage. I still love the ABB and the Dead, but Bruce will always be up there for me.

I've been listening to the Promise and Magic and really really like them. It's been a long time since I've listened to Bruce, but I'm glad I started again.

With you there, liked some of his early stuff and I think the live thing was more for his earlier years....you can play a long time but if there is no excitement what's the point?
