With a planned 12 miler tomorrow, I will have done 130 miles in July, the most I've run since high school. Between the heat and the extra miles, I feel like I'm losing my speed. However, these miles are critical as I ramp up for my first ever marathon on Dec 10. The training plan I'm (mostly) following calls for 250 miles/month in Oct & Nov (with taper at end of November).

I'm still hitting the gym for weights 2-3 times/week and doing perfect pushup routine once a week too.

wow Tim, that is wild!

squat day today, thoughts on going heavy and moving up:

I decided last week squat day to not go to highest weight, stop at 350 and go for reps and quality focus in workout and give legs a heavy reprieve. So today, totally rested. here is my squat routine today and you can see pyramid / rep on downside technique.

8 X 135
6 X 225
5 X 275
3 X 315
3 X 350
3 X 385
5 X 315
8 X 275
15 X 225 (with 2 sec pause at bottoms on this set)

I could have done more reps at each weight on upside of pyramid, but I wouldn't have hit 385 then, or it would have sucked. I rep on the downside of pyramid and blast out there, especially last set which is killer.

I am where I want to be in the time I predicted (6 weeks) at the 350 to 385 move up period and it feels good, decent form, not perfect yet at that highest weight, but since 3 @ 385 is not freaky at all (it was at first) it is time for 405 attempt next week.

Reading this I'd better get to the gym in a few minutes.....

To be honest,I work out like a maniac and eat crazy careful healthy as I battle my MS(which makes the end of my 5-6 mile run quite a burden),diabetes(genetic and years of being overweight and eating crap--although last blood work showed no diabetes given the diet and workouts) and a few other related problems. Each time I feel crummy I work out anyway--the docs say rest when i'm MS weak, but screw them--that's when I go my hardest, just to beat them and to feel that I beat the illnesses down...the endorphin kick is awesome and usually my symptoms decrease or disappear after workouts.....but,it is,on some days, quite a struggle....ok---time to quit whining and see ya after gym time....great day to all you fellow workout nuts!!

Got 1200 yards in the pool (6 X200). It was good to stretch it out. Another 600 and that makes a mile. I'll shoot for that next month.

Best part is I'm getting a speedo tan. Can't wait to show the Mrs.!

Damn! Broke my toe on Wednesday somehwe while doing the boating thing on the Brazos River. Had to miss Friday's workout and my cardio stuff for the rest of the week, could barely walk. This is frustrating! Hopefully I can resume the weights Monday and do some stationary bike riding for cardio. And it's time to start dieting! I am apparently unable to control my portions without serious committment and effort.

that hurts just thinking about your broke toe, yikes. my brother once dropped a 25 pound weight on his toe. my brother is dumber than me, btw.

So I broke my Bird's Lots Of Rest Days For Geriatric Lifter's Principle and went bonzo gonzo blastomatic last Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. I went heavier than usual on everything I could think of, did exercizes I never do and just generally did an insane three days. The price? that is the sorest (good sore) I have been in years. I was literally a hobbled up freak for three days. So I finally went back to gym today (4 days off, yikes) and since I don't know better, went whacko again. On tri's did behind the neck pullovers and decided the 80's were wussy and used the 90's and got 8 reps, so I think all this heavy stuff is paying off, I couldn't do 8 on the 70's a year ago.

squats tomorrow

Finally got back into the gym this week! I hurt my back trying to re-set a toilet with a busted toe. Was forced to just lay out for almost two weeks. My body feels very rested and I didn't lose much cardio or strength wise. Everything feels good now. I think I will stay on my reduced days schedule for a while. Hope everyone is still at it.

The good news is i am weaned off of prednizone now but i will take 100 miligrams of Imurane per day for the rest of my life.and it makes me tired.. but I am getting ready to go run 3 this am and hopefully i can get back to at least 5 or 6 4 times a week... keep on gettin after it ...

I'm ramping up my mileage to get ready for my marathon on Dec 10. I'm also running the Napa Ragnar Relay in a month where I'll do 21 total over 3 legs (overall 20 hour timeframe). I'm set to log 50 miles this week for the first time ever with my planned Thurs & Fri runs, except my right hamstring is bothering me now. It's OK in the morning and if I warm up before I run. Sitting just makes it tight/sore. It's getting worse.

I'm bummed because I'm on a roll (did my adult & masters 5K PR of 18:23 on Saturday). I've been injury free for a couple of years now, since converting to forefoot/midfoot running.

About to take an ice bath and maybe take a couple days off!

Hope everyone can get a good, Friday workout in. It's always my favorite day to train. I tend to be more motivated to push it.

Friday's workout will be a half hour in the pool. Hope to crank out 1200 yards.

GO FOR IT!

Went to a different gym last Saturday, that always motivates..... Handy to have some weights at home also, too lazy to go to gym tonight so did a 45 minute bicep work out at the house.

New idea!!!! After it sitting in garages and basements for over 25 years, I am going to hang the old heavy bag up again! Decided it would be great, as it is combo muscle and cardio if you do it right. Plus after a year your hands get pretty tough. My bag has mojo, from a real boxing gym in Tuscon, a gift from an old friend who boxed pro lightweight.

Heavy bag challenge: how long can you keep it suspended up at a 30 to 45 degree angle from hitting it with hard left / rights never letting it go vertical 90 degree, always hitting to try to keep it at the 30 to 45 degree. Sounds easy eh?

I've got a heavy bag somewhere out in the garage I've never used. Great idea! First, I have to clean the garage though. This summer has been very frustrating for me, at least the second half. Tweaked ankle, pulled chest muscle, broken toe, back spasms. Then I make it back for two workouts and get some sort of summer illness from my daughter! AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!! At least I can almost breathe today. Shooting for a Monday workout to get back into it. Wish me luck.

Well not the best day today but I did get out and do something. Couldn't go the full distance and had to stop for a few minutes. Finished up and called it a day. I'll be ready to go on Monday!

Carpe Diem!

Back to the pool again today. Monday's workout was one of the best I've had in a long time. Looking forward to another strong swim. Understanding some technique sure makes it more efficient.

Shoulder press night and seeing small gains, it is the hardest lift for me to increase on. Sure feel triceps on heavy shoulder night. Next goal is 70 lb dumbells and can do 65's. My left deltoid and right elbow are reasons for slow progress, but I am moving up.

More important, after much ado and hang, readjust, rehang... the old heavy bag is up in the basement. I still can murder it Been many many years like decades ago that I last smacked it. Left hook straight right still there.

I'm hoping for a return to the gym this weekend. Decided to let my body heal all the way up and get over this cold or whatever it is I can finally breathe most of the time again, but lots of drainage and coughing still, but it's getting better.
