I agree with bird. Add a third set and things really start changing.

By doing back to back same excercizes, you maximize blood flow to that muscle group. By two in a row. You also (if weights) allow second set to add weight since first set warms up muscles, if you split the sets, you probaly wouldn't ad weight since you would have cooled off that muscle group by not two in a row.

Interesting..
Always looking for ways to shake things up.
What if its a different machine, but same muscle group?
( Example - bench press, then seated bench press. Same effect?)

Looks like I have an "official" 5 mile run at the end of the month.
Time to take things to the next level!
Should get interesting as it gets colder though

I would still do togethor Wharfy. Different angles for the same muscle group. So to do same lift togethor, you will gain the most.

I want to go off on a tangent.

Chest is over focused on by almost every beginner lifter. Very common to see young (or not) lifters who have done it for a year and have overdeveloped pecs compared to legs and back. It is because 1) Chest responds to training easily with results, 2) It is the ego / glory lift (How Much Can You Bench often asked) .

I believe proper delt training is the better focus. Seated barbell or dumbell shoulder press, build big strong delts. Upper chest gets secondary work, so when hard training delts, incline press is really not needed.

For chest, sure bench, but try dumbell flyes heavy as an option. Arnold built his pecs on heavy flyes, not as much benching. I am doing 80lb dumbell flyes and want to do 100's. No bench at all anymore. Press lift is the seated delt ones. But I have benched over the years a lot and I have a foundation so everyone is different. Just don't make bench the be all end all most do.

I suck at shoulder presses. Such a frustrating exercise for me. If I could pick one in my circuit to skip, that would be it.

On a good note, I did run my first mile today. Hooray! Have not run an honest non-stop mile in a looong time.

Down 6 lbs from my first post on 9/12. Sitting at 274 now. Not losing weight as fast as I expected, but man do I feel a difference in flexibility and energy. Keepin' on, folks.

6 lbs in 9/12 is great! Keep up the running.

Bird - thanks for the lifting insight. I appreciate it. Now I want to see you putting in some cardio You'd enjoy running more than you think (with good forefoot form).

Well finally got a run in with a decent climb today. Glad I'm easing my way back in. Tomorrow is a swim day... in the rain too!

How is everyone doing? I'm finally getting back to where I was before I had to lay out this summer. What a great feeling!

Weight has stagnated a bit. Still 65 from goal.

I did run 6 miles for the first time this week though

6 miles! That's awesome Chuck! I'm just back up to 3 miles, but have increased my pace a bit. Weight is still around 220, still looking to get to 210. I think now it's more an issue of portion control and cutting out the 9pm "snack". That's gonna be hard! Back to the gym today. I love workout days.

WharfRat - way to run 6 miles! Great stuff.

Here is my non-scientific, anecdotal analysis - I bet that by hitting a weight loss plateau on the way to your ultimate goal (I have zero doubt you will hit it), that it only improves your chances of keeping it off when you get there. You'll have already practiced maintaining a weight level. Plus, if the lbs just shed off without the hard work/lifestyle change you've made, it would be "diet" instead of a new way of life. Keep up the good work!

Congrats to all who are showing perseverance in the face of obstacles.

Thanks Tim..

Like I have said, making changes that you cant stick with forever is pointless.
Food, exercise, whatever. Everything I am doing now, I can see myself doing forever.
Nothing crazy, nothing is "off limits".
Moderation

At this point, at my age, I am all about being healthy.
Weight loss will follow suit

I got in a funk this week and goofed off. Back tomorrow! Squats after a month off, injured knee. A month ago I tried to deadlift 400 after not dealifting for a year and not having done 400 in probaly 15 years. It was really stupid 315 went great for a few, but 400 did my knee. But I am healed! I will just go medium tomorrow maybe even light, work back in. But I did great in the month on upper body. I am officially on 100 LB dumbells on Tricep extensions (behind head) tricep kickbacks, bent dumbell rows, and I want to use them on flyes ultimately (90 now). They have 110's also and I can see where the big gyms going to 150's can be handy. I am proud to do what I do at 55 no roids and I want to show that old guys can rock.

Chuck.... 6 miles? Insanity, dude. Great stuff.

Still hitting the gym 3+times a week, but need to do more on the diet front. Im 'behaving', but not really sacrificing. That's next.

Had a great workout yesterday, topped it off with 3 miles in 27 minutes. Was feeling pretty good about myself until I ran into an old student of mine. He had just finished 2 miles in 11 minutes. Jerk.

27 mins?? Sweet!
You got me beat.

Another 5K event today. 36:46 is my time to beat.
Feeling pretty good about beating that.
At 48* right now, this will definately be my COLDEST run yet!
Tons of stretching and warmup are on tap
