Recently...like 6 or 7 weeks ago a feral cat gave birth to 3 kittens in my garage. During this time I came around a lot and I feed them and got them box trained. I did some petting and handling so today I successfully caught 2 of the kttens and brought them in the house to be better socialized so I can find them a home and I seperated the 3rd kitten from it's mom but can't catch the little bugger. I want to make it as less tramatic as i can. Is there a good way for me to trap this 3rd kitten so i can find a home for it.

Please no kick the cat comments from the cat haters

Grab a net, shut the garage door and may the best man/kitty win.

he's behind a large cabinet full of stuff...I'm trying to avoid removing all the stuff and taking everything away from the walls. I have some canned tuna kitten food in a cat carrier I'm hoping he'll come out and get use to eating in there then I'll just shut the door behind him....if not...Gotta go to the SPCA and get a trap from them. Don't really want to do that I'd like to keep it on friendly terms

Goldtop, you are a good person to help those kittens. Food in the carrier is how our rescue
traps strays. That should work out. God bless you!

It's been a rough day for those 3. The 2 I have in the house are hunkered in a corner behind a desk and this last one is breakin my heart(ya ya I know broken hearts are for A$$ holes) because I can't get it to come out from behind that cabinet. I'd like to get all 3 of them together so the siblings can at least comfort each other during this first split from mom. The mom cat is stalking around the house and garage tryin to call to them....We all ready have 2 dogs and a cat now or i'd probably find a way to keep them but I can't take care of that many animals and I don't think our cat will take to others being around the house. I've got the 2 kittens in a small room our regular cat hasn't sniffed them out yet. I guess I gotta be patient...not one of my better attributes

Ron, I think you're going to have to move the cabinet and get the kitty out. Kittens that haven't been handled a lot from the very beginning never really socialize well, and this one is going through a pretty traumatic experience. The sooner you get it back with it's siblings and mother, the better. I've been reading that kittens need to stay with their mother and siblings until they are 12 weeks old to fully socialize well, but a lot of human handling during that time is important, too.

First of all, calm down. I've been in this position.

I've found that just sitting on the floor near a stray and talking to them quietly gets them used to you. If they run, just stay put and they MIGHT get curious and come back to you. If not, try it again later. You've provided a source of food they're not going to leave.

I like that shut the garage door idea!

I had a kitty coming to my front door for months for food, even in the snow, but she'd never let me grab her. Finally, maybe six months in, I put on the big gardening gloves, sat down a few feet from a bowl of food and snatched her quick when she wasn't looking. She remained skittish for quite some time. Remember, they'll get comfortable on THEIR time, not yours.

You are a kitty saint. I love people like you!

As of this morning the 3rd kitten some how found it's way out of the garage and is with mom again under my shed. I don't think I'm gonna save that one I think he'll probably end up feral and running the neighborhood. But I'm gonna try. The other two are doing fine they are in my teaching studio running around but still a little scared when I come in the room. I played with them for about 1/2 hr this moring after feeding them. I have a little play mouse on a string. The black one is still to skidish for me to pickup the one with thick black stripes comes right up to me he's is still a little hesitant about being held but he does let me do it

Pipedream. I don't think i could have gotten to the kittens if I waited any longer. The mom is feral and I was afraid she was goning to take them before I could get them human socialized. She would hiss any time I came around so I was also worried the little ones where going to learn to not trust humans. plus if they got any bigger I don't think I could have caught them. They are weaned because they eat kibble and they use the kitty box so I thought it was the time to intervene. I don't have a lot of experince with socializing kittens but I wanted to give these kittens a better life than their mom has. Plus mom was crapping in my garage on top of old Piano I have in there. Fortunately it has some plastic on the top so no damage done other than the mess and smell.

Another Update...I caught the 3rd Kitty. He wandered back into the garage and I was able to get to him. All 3 are inside my cat carrier and they seem to be fine they're all cuddled together. I feel bad for stripping them from their mom but it was that or have 3 more strays roaming around having numerous litters of feral cats.

It is very important that you capture and spay the mother cat. Otherwise she will continue to have kittens and it is unlikely that you will be in a position to care for all of them...

When my neighbor moved to assisted living, she abandoned a litter of kittens (she took the unspayed mother with her). One of those kittens, Darrell, turned out to be a Darlene and proceeded to reproduce. I finally caught her after she brought this litter to my doorstep:

When I moved her and her kittens inside she was already pregnant again! In the short time from her abandonment to when I removed her from the feral breeding population she managed to have eleven kittens that I know of...

The life of a stray/feral cat is not a good one. It is filled with disease, danger and malnutrition. Most of the kittens will not reach breeding age, yet enough survive to keep this horrible situation going. That is why it is so important that you ensure the mother cannot get pregnant again...

You are doing the right thing, thank you.

Right on, Ron. I didn't realize the mother was that wild. You definitely needed to get them away, and did the right thing. I actually just got another kitten 2 weeks ago that was very small, just 5-6 weeks old when it got here, which is why I've been reading so much about them. I actually had to help this one poop the first few times. But I still don't mind taking one of yours. My other cats are doing fine with the little girl, and she is doing fine with them. Bringing another baby in now is probably the right time. So if you want to load one of them up and bring it over the mountain, it will probably like it here. The new girl never acted like she missed her home at all, and jumped right in. I think it will help yours a lot to have this baby already here. Buddy likes playing with the kitten, and is very gentle with her.

It would be great if you could catch the mom and have her spayed, but that is easier said than done. If she is hanging around, and you can trap her, there are places that will do if for free, or very cheap, and they'll clip her ear and you can just take her and turn her loose again. She'll have a far easier life, even if she is still wild.
