Wonder how many people there commit crimes in hopes on being sent there? Surely for alot of sorry folks that is a better alternative than working hard and trying to make a good life for themselves.

Further I wonder what the results are in regards to the folks that have been "rehabilitated" at this facility and released.

Well, this guy being a complete lunatic aside, it looks like one of our white collar prisons, or facilities for the criminally insane, where US nutters go (like Mark David Chapman or John Hinckley, Jr) rather than the typical azz pounding, toilet hooch making prisons we see on TV, it appears the Norwegians have a system that seems to work for them.

Before Americans rush to judge Norway’s criminal justice system — which relies far less on punitive measures than ours and that has a strong focus on rehabilitation — they should look at the results it produces. Norway is one of the safest countries on earth, boasting some of the world’s lowest crime rates:

- Norway Has Some Of The Lowest Murder Rates In The World: In 2009, Norway had .6 intentional homicides per 100,000 people. In the same year, the United States had 5 murders per 100,000 people, meaning that the U.S. proportionally has 8 times as many homicides.

- Norway’s Incarceration Rate Is A Fraction Of That Of The United States: 71 out of every 100,000 Norwegian citizens is incarcerated. In the United States, 743 out of every 100,000 citizens was incarcerated in 2009. The U.S. has the world’s highest incarceration rate.

- Norway’s Prisoner Recidivism Rate Is Much Lower Than The United States’: The recidivism rate for prisoners in Norway is around 20 percent. Meanwhile, it’s estimated that 67 percent of America’s prisoners are re-arrested and 52 percent are re-incarcerated.

The population of that country is just under 5 million. Hard to compare it to a country where a city like NYC has a population of over 8 million and the state of NY over 20 million. Plus when you look at the diversity of ethnic and social classes within the US compared to Norway, its like apples and oranges. IMHO.

Not stating they dont have a viable system that seems to work but its hard for me to compare what goes on there and what goes on in the US. And when you mass murder someone I dont want rehabilitation, I want them locked up for the rest of their lives in a hole not a hotel.

Just my opinion.

I am sorry but I do not think that anyone that kills 76 people can be rehabilitated. This was clearly premeditated.

As a birthday present to Rowland, perhaps this would be better discussed in the Whipping Post forum.

I'm pretty sure the folks on the WP might enjoy this....

On a different note, anyone really suffering financially in the USA might want to commit a crime in Norway and....well,it doesn't look like too shabby way of life at all....

Yeah but how long can you stay? Even murder only gets you 21 years. How long can burglary get you?

It's been reported today that he may be charged with "crimes against humanity" which carries a 30 year sentence.

Ahh good point. But I thought the humane system prevented recidivism.

I am just confused about this freak. He says he is right wing conservative who is concerned about too many Muslims in Europe. Then, he does exactly what the terrorists (Muslim or otherwise) do; he blows stuff up and shoots a bunch of iinocent kids at camp!

What a mixed up freak that dude is.....
