I just saw on Facebook where Taz DiGregorio, longtime keyboard player for CDB, has passed away due to a car accident. He was a cool guy, prayers to his family.

Taz has been with Charlie from the beginning.
Sadly now confirmed on the CDB website.
I remember first seeing the CDB at the Hofstra playhouse opening for Hot Tuna in 73. The Felt Forum tour when they opened for The Marshall Tucker Band which became the MTB double live album. And of course 3rd row center at the Academy of Music for the CDB/Lynyrd Skynyrd double billl.
Taz was an original right up there with Billy Powell, and you can't replace those types of players.
Prayers out to the family and for Charlie. RIP Taz.

I'm kind of wondering if Taz DiGregorio really passed away. Other than the Facebook mention, I haven't found anything else about his passing. You would certainly think that if he did pass, that the Charlie Daniels website would have had something to say about it. So far nothing.

wondering if this is so myself, but here's some real fine video to watch in the meantime:

pretty sure this is taz on the left on keyboards, hard to find video with him in it:

video from a year ago, charlie with amanda shaw sitting in, not sure if they ever show keyboards:

while you are at it, you might as well check out 10 minutes of freebird from a festival across the river from new orleans this last weekend:

(10 minutes, almost makes it to the end of the song)

I read it on Doug Gray's page, he said that Charlie had called him earlier this morning and told him.

And here is the link to Taz's Facebook page, seems to be true unfortunately.

The Charlie Daniels Band
?(Nashville, Tenn. – October 13, 2011) Joel ‘Taz’ DiGregorio, longtime keyboard player and vocalist for The Charlie Daniels Band, has passed away. DiGregorio died Wednesday night as a result of injuries he sustained in a single car accident in Cheatham County, TN, while driving to meet the CDB tour bus. The accident occurred on I-40 West of Nashville. The band was scheduled to depart for Cummin...g, GA, for a concert appearance at the Cumming Country Fair and Festival on Oct. 13th. The CDB has cancelled their concerts scheduled for tonight, Oct. 13th in Cumming, GA. at the Cumming Country Fair and Festival and Saturday, Oct. 15th in Waterbury, CT. at the Palace Theater. From Southbridge, Mass., Taz was an original member of the CDB for over 40 years and a co-writer on many CDB songs, including "The Devil Went Down To Georgia." “I am in shock now, Taz was one of my best friends,” says Charlie Daniels. “The CDB family has lost a great friend and musician. We traveled many miles together and shared so many nights on the road. We’re going to miss you buddy. You were one of a kind and will never be forgotten. We send our deepest condolences to the family.” Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

WOW! So sorry to hear of this! First Tommy Crain, now Taz, Charlie's lost two of his original road Dawgs in the last year or so! I Remember the first time I saw the CDB was at Bell Auditorium in Augusta Ga, sometime in mid-70's. Some friends of mine were playing in a local band that opened for the CDB that night! I was blown away by how much of their sound was drawn from the Allman Brothers Band. Great musicians all, who could stretch out and rock you to the core. My thoughts & prayers go out to the CDB and to Taz's family!

Charlie Daniels is a good man and has always been good to me, and Charlie Hayward is a prince of a guy as well. But Taz was the cat in the CDB that I spent the most time with, and we had great conversations and fun every time we hung out, whether it was sneaking around the back of the legendary Music Hall in Cincinnati or talking horses in Lawrenceburg, Indiana along the Ohio River. And he loved his horse. Taz had just posted pics from Alaska but a few weeks ago. He was a big part of the heart of the CDB and a big part of the soundtrack of my youth. Condolences to his family and the CDB family.

His keyboard work was essential to the CDB, and my favorite playing of his was on the song "Carolina (I Hear You Calling.)" For those of, you who have forgotten what real southern rock with heart sounds like;

Sorry to read about Taz. When I was in school in PA in the late '70s, I sold Taz a roll of insulation to put under his grand piano for that night's show.

One of my favorite CDB tunes - that was the first one I thought of when you mentioned his keyboard playing. And High Lonesome might be their best record track for track - a VERY underrated record.

Man, what a bummer. Taz was a great keyboardist, musician, and obviously an integral part of the CDB. Man, those early 70's shows with Tommy Crain, Taz, Charlie and the rest of the band really made for some great music. I really like the Nightrider album, think I'll go home tonite and spin it in memory of another fallen Brother. Prayers for Taz's family, and the Charlie Daniels Band members...it can't be easy.
RIP Taz. Find Billy Powell and Tommy and rock on down the Rainbow Circuit.

The Charlie Daniels Band
This is the hardest soapbox I've ever written.

This morning about 4:15am I got the news that I had lost one of my oldest and dearest friends, Taz DiGregorio. He was killed in a one-car accident on I-40, East of Nashville when he was driving to catch our tour bus to go on the road.

As I write this, I am still somewhat in shock and have not fully accepted that there will be an empty spot on stage right where Taz's keyboards set for over forty years.

I honestly don't know what it's going to feel like when I walk back on stage for the first time without him, but one thing I do know, the music will go on, but it will never be quite the same.

Taz's wailing organ and rowdy piano were a mainstay in The CDB style since our very first records in the early 70's.

His tender piano intro to "Carolina I Remember You", his jazzy organ solo on "Birmingham Blues" and the signature riff he wrote for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" were as much a part of The CDB sound as the songs themselves.

I traveled a good part of the world with Taz. We've been broke down on the roadsides of America, stranded by an air traffic controller's strike in Paris, stood together at the Berlin Wall and the 38th Parallel, walked the streets of Hong Kong, London, Amsterdam, Dublin, Juarez, Sydney, and a thousand little towns you've probably never even heard of.

We've stormed the Big Apple, the Big Easy, the Rockies, the Smokies, Clamtown, Beantown, the Midlands and the Maritimes and lit up the Daddy of 'Em All in Cheyenne Wyoming.

We've been in jail in Louisiana, rained on in Raleigh, shot at in Baghdad and left behind a trail that stretches millions of miles, thousands of shows and zillions of memories.

Taz was there through some of the toughest stretches of my life, when my dad died suddenly, through my battles with cancer and stroke and during the years it took me to pay off massive debts from a bad business arrangement.

Conversely, he shared some of the highest moments of my life, when my son was born, when we had our first gold record, when I was inducted into the Musician's Hall of Fame and when I became a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

At this early stage of the game, it's hard for me to think about what the future will be like without Taz in it, but I know one thing…

There is an empty place in my life today that nobody else will ever fill.

I will miss you my friend.

Love never dies.

William Joel DiGregorio
Born January 8, 1944
Southbridge, Massachusetts

What do you think?

Pray for our troops, and for our country.

God Bless America

Charlie Daniels

Sorry to hear about this.
Always really enjoyed Taz' gritty vocals. Seems like every time I saw them they did NYC Kingside Rosewood Bed.

also saddened - I didn't know that Tommie Crain passed away also
