Catherine Popper Leaves Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

In a statement posted to her Facebook page, bassist Catherine Popper has announced her departure from Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. Popper is the second bassist to part ways with the band, following the departure of Bryan Dondero in early 2009. The statement from Popper’s facebook page reads:

“Hey everybody for the past two and a half years, GPN has been my family away from my family. We’ve all grown so much together. So it’s with sadness that I want y’all to know the Goodnight Irene benefit in VT in September was my last gig with GPN in the foreseeable future. It was a bittersweet night, to be sure, and we had a kind farewell as they left to go make a new record. I’m a lucky so-and-so to have been a part of that crew for as long as I was and I wish them all the joy the world has to offer.”

The news of Popper’s departure comes on the heels of a major tour announcement that will see the band perform at stadiums with country stars Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw.

Wonder what affect this will have on the GPN sound. I thought Catherine did a good job and also thought that having 2 women in the band worked well for them.

I don't think a change in the band's sound will be of particular concern to the fans of Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw.

Disappointing! She was solid in The Nocturnals.

I also very much enjoyed her in Ryan Adams & The Cardinals. When she harmonized with Ryan she gave them a bit of a Gram/Emmylou feel. She is any asset to any band she plays in and is not bad on the eyes, either. Wish her the best:

I am vaguely familair with GPandTN.
I know only of their hit, that one song, and of the leader singer , Grace Potter's song with KennyC.

I just find it weird when a member of group leaves after being with a band earning peanuts, playing every small club where most or half people don't really care for x band in particular, x band that night is all the same, traveling in a van with trailer attached, etc, why leave a group when they finally hit it.
The lead singers are the ones who really get recognition so...
The one who writes is the main one too.

Must be somethin' else.

I like Sugarland. Song writer for them and guitar player , K, left soon after they really hit it. I won't mention why. Google it. That case, fans know about.
Of course, Netles and Bush are hot as fire right now and still are just starting because you know movies, endorsements, etc. are all coming up.

GPandTN, hmmm, well, we know GP is on her way up and solo soon.

Things will be OK...as I recall, Grace doesn't seem to think much of bass players anyway.

I hate to see her leave GPN. I know that she had some health concerns this past summer but not sure if they relate to this or not. I really enjoyed her playing and the kinda balancing role she took on. Some speculation has Benny Yurco picking up the bass and while he is more than capable I think that would be waste of his talents. To me the addition of Benny and Cat really freed up the band, Scott Tournet in particular.
As far as the Kenny Chesney/Tim McGraw tour ..... good for GPN. It will give them a chance to play to alot of potential new fans. While I won't pay to go see GPN in a stadium setting as an opening act there seems to be 50,000 fans per event that will. Good for them.

I know there are alot of Grace haters on here, for however many various reasons they may have. So be it but for me I am so grateful that I finally found them about a year and half ago. I haven't been a fan of new music in a long long time and this band ignited a spark in me that has been missing for many years.
I hate that Catherine isn't going to be with them and I wish her the best of luck but I can't wait to hear what the new GPN CD will sound like.

My disappointment comes from what I perceive to be the slow death of the band formerly known as Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. From the commercial release that was the last album to the news of touring with the two country acts previously mentioned. While I suppose I'm happy for their commercial success these past couple of years, I just see it all as the end of what once was an up and coming Rock and Roll band for the sake of fame and fortune. But it's their choice so I just need to except it. After all, it's just Rock band.

She's a really good bass player and vocalist. I wonder what's up also. She was for sure an asset to GPN.

She plays from time to time, I guess when schedule allows with a guy I went to school with. She's on his EP. Check him out if you like that Wilco/Ryan Adams type stuff.

Grace is friggin' hot but I didn't dig their last commercial sounding record and it seems they are trying to take it even more main stream. I liked some of their earlier stuff and liked the band before the last lineup change but the new band and new music are just boring to me. If I never hear that OOO LA LA Paris song ever again I will be very happy.

Country really is the hottest genre in music right now, so maybe Grace is trying to hop on board that bandwagon. She has made it pretty clear that she wants to be a big star, and there is no better path to stardom for a pretty girl than joining the country music machine.

I wonder if the new record will be a country record?

Popper left Potter?

I just realized that I am so far out of date, living in the musical past, that music news is now gibberish to me

I saw Grace open for DTB years ago and her band was for me, better than the headliner.

All downhill since then, Grace seems to be a diva.

Too bad.

I saw GPN open for Mule in '07. It was ok, though most song lyrics seemed pretty vacuous. I decided to watch some stream of them again this past summer, but most of it was w/ the mute button engaged .

I loved Catherine. It may be a health issue that is preventing her from doing the rigorous touring GPN does and will do.

I always thought Andy Hess would make a great bass player for them. He is a wonderfully melodic bass player and I think his sound would work with the Nocturnals.

He might be a good fit but I don't think that style of commercial music would interest him. Maybe I am wrong but I don't see much room for jamming and improv in the Noctournal's music.

Grace has made her choice and it looks like she is going for Pop stardom over building a permanent loyal following in the jam scene as Warren has done. More power to her if that is her choice. But it is not for me. I did not like the last album at all. It looks like I will be moving away from Grace. She was not the first and I'm sure she will not be the last artist whose change in style loses me. That said I don't know that this had anything to do with the departure of Catherine Popper.

At the Tabby , right ? I was there too . Grace is a pretty thing , but the only thing that was cool about her show was the guy using a Silvertone .
