THE UNLIKEABLE MITT ROMNEY

The former Massachusetts governor is a rich jerk who just can't help himself.

By Markos Moulitsas
www.valleyadvocate.com

Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney recently met with some Bethel Park, Pa., residents around a picnic table, supposedly to talk about the state of the economy. Instead, Romney eyed a plate of cookies.

"I'm not sure about those cookies," he said. "They don't look like you made them. No, no. They came from the local 7-11 bakery, or whatever." In fact, the cookies had come from a beloved local bakery. As the baker said, "We wanted him to be welcomed with the best in the 'Burgh, and he had no idea."

"Cookiegate," as the local press dubbed it, isn't the first time Romney felt compelled to insult the commoners when he deigns to appear with them. At this year's Daytona 500, Romney approached a group of race fans wearing plastic ponchos. "I like those fancy raincoats you brought," he said. "Really sprung for the big bucks!" Who told him being a jerk is good politics?

Romney has a clear need to flaunt his perceived superiority over those around him. He doesn't really like NASCAR, he tells people, but "I have some friends who are NASCAR team owners." Where does he want Peyton Manning to end up? "I've got a lot of good friends, the owner [of the] Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets--both owners are friends of mine," he said, before getting to what should've been his answer all along: "Let's keep him away from New England."

That sort of arrogance may play well at tony yacht clubs, where Romney's name-dropping might impress the swells. But everywhere else, all folks see is an insufferable bore.

The polling isn't even close. When an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll asked respondents whom they found more "easygoing and likeable," President Obama was chosen by an overwhelming 54-18 margin. A CNN poll found that 56 percent of respondents considered Obama "likeable," while only 27 percent said the same about Romney.

Even among Republicans, Romney's unpopularity reaches historic highs. Gallup found that 42 percent of Republicans who supported him in its final 2012 nomination preference poll was the lowest Gallup had measured since the advent of primaries. The previous low was George W. Bush's 57 percent in 2000.

It's hardly surprising conservatives don't love him. Romney just forgot about "freedom fries" and the last decade's concerted conservative effort to turn France into the greatest American enemy, and waxed poetic about his Parisian vacations. "The best memories were
with my wife on vacations from time to time in France. The last vacation we had there, walking around the city of Paris, and walking not just the Champs-Elysees, but also over to the Jardin of Luxembourg and around the city...I look forward to occasional vacations again in such a beautiful place."

That'll make it much harder for conservatives--who got the vapors when Obama put spicy mustard on his burger---to pretend they like their 2012 nominee.

Romney's camp says Americans just need to get to know the real Mitt. But everytime Romney interacts with voters or the press, he reinforces the fact that he's a rich jerk--whether it's bragging about how much he likes firing people or laughing about his dad outsourcing jobs from Michigan or saying that he just doesn't care about the poor.

Mitt Romney just isn't a likeable guy. And that means the Romney campaign's biggest liability is Mitt Romney.

Man, I love liberal whining, especialy in print. In a way, this article is kind of like the phenomenon of hearing a group of liberals talk in a room where they think all that are there are also liberals. Buying their own bullsh*t is just the start. Always entertaining. Obama could take a dump on a paper plate and light a candle and put it on top of the pile and sing "Happy Birthday" and the Left would be grabbing spoons. It is good to know that this country could be run into the ground by a gosh darned likeable guy.

Romney is not only RICH, but he hates women! The day after he gets elected he's going to teach them a lesson and steal their birth control.

He also hates the middle class! He got rich stealing their money and that's what he'll do as President. Did you know he has a Swiss bank account?

And Obama is right, all Romney wants is dirty air and dirty water! Republicans hate clean air and water, and that's his whole plan.

You are absolutely correct thank you. Supporting all these anti women initiatives and accepting Koch Brothers money and hiding his money off shore, supporting the Paul Ryan complete piece of crap budget he certainly does endorse all the things you state above. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's a duck.

Too funny because I can't really put my finger on why I do not like him. No wait, yes I can. It is because I think he is a pussy.

I'll wager he would cry during a fist fight.

Wasn't one of the driving forces behind Obama supporters in '08 the fact that he represented something different from what we had? His positions were nebulous (Hope! Change!!), and his accomplishments nil. But he wasn't going to be like Bush, so let's vote for him!

It doesn't really matter who the candidate is any longer: someone with a deeply detailed agenda and a resume of leadership and accomplishment, or some schmoe with a nice suit and facility for oration. A large portion of the public is going to vote feelings, not remotely understand the policy facts involved. If they're not comfortable with the current guy, let's give a new suit a chance.

Its easy to criticize the "anyone but Obama" voter, but the same mentality four years ago helped put him where he is today.

That's not how I remember it. "McSame" might have been on the ballot, but it was obvious who Obama was running against.

I could go point for point on why I didn't vote for the McCain-Palin ticket. Remember, I'm the one that didn't think Obama was going to win, and I don't think he is going to win this year, either.

Once again, in political threads here that now probably easily number into the thousands, Republiconvservatarians shift everything back on the Left and all of its perceived evils, and abjectly refuse to defend their candidate or any of their supposed positions.

You all will go on ad infinitum about how much you despise the Left, hate liberals, destest Obama and blame all of them for all the evils since Adam bit the apple. But, you won't say one thing positive about Mitt Romney, much as there was actually very little support for McCain.

Where are all these conservative principles, just waiting to be foisted on a long suffering citizenry? Where is the passion?

Perhaps you won't like me lumping you in with that, but I've concluded that Libertarians are basically stoner Republicans.

Not as funny as the inconsistent frauds that spent eight years trashing Bush, then turn around and defend Obama's pathetic record. It's impossible to do both and be taken seriously.
