He is credited for bass and background vocals on Dickie's "Highway Call" album.

Is Stray a nickname? If so, what's his real name?

I ask because many years ago there was a Straton in my hometown in Georgia who I think became a professional musician in the Atlanta area. Just wondering if this might be the same guy.

???

Stray Straton was the bass player on Highway Call -- Johnny played bass on some of them but Stray, who was mentioned as Stray Slayton on the album, did as well

Stray was also in one of, if not the first, incarnation of Les Dudek's solo band.

I gotta stop posting
coulda sworn he was mentioned as Stray Slayton on the album -- looked again today, & both on HCall and the GA Music Tour booklet, he's indeed mentioned as Stray Straton -- so cool your jets, ...
good weekend all!

I've been checking around to see if we have Stray's given name but I can't find it anywhere. Johnny said he knew it just long enough to fill out the session papers for the Highway Call album and hasn't heard it since. Sorry, I tried.

Thanks, Ann. I think I'm getting close. Found this post on Tony Rice's website:

Tony: So sorry to hear about your uncle Walter Poindexter's passing. I just found this out today. I worked with him on Dickey Betts LP Highway Call. He was a great guy and told me a joke that I'll never forget and I'll never forget him either. All my best.
Stray Straton
Villa Rica, GA - Friday, August 05, 2005 at 06:59:43 (EDT)

There are both a Ted Straton and Marvin Straton listed in Villa Rica. Those are the names I'm remembering from many years ago. Stray is bound to be one of them.

I recognize Marvin. I asked Johnny and he said yes, his name is Marvin! Thank you for getting it that far!

Marvin and Ted are brothers. Looks like they both got around. The credits for Les Dudek's second album (Say No More, 1977) lists Ted as playing organ on a couple of cuts.

This is about the best source of information about Straton I'm able find on the www. I enjoy his playing w/Dickey on the 'Highway Call' album and concert recordings of that era.

Late to the game here, but 'Stray' or Marvin, does indeed live in the Villa Rica area. I've been to his house and he has a small studio set up in his basement with a lot of old equipment. He was a studio musician for Capricorn so as you can imagine, has played with and hung out with a lot of important names...and that is how he hooked up with Dickey and the Brothers, among others. As someone mentioned, he did tour with Les and Marvin showed me some cool photos of him on stage with Les. He also has some very cool things he showed me like a few of Duane's shirts, some things that belonged to Berry, and lots of cool photos, hand written notes/lyrics, etc. Unfortunately he hasn't heard from any of them in a long time and was last playing bass at a church in the Atlanta area. Good guy.
