REPUBLICAN LAWMAKER TELLS WORKER WANTING A HIGHER MINIMUM WAGE TO "GET A JOB."
July 5, 2012

A worker in Florida got an earful from Rep. C.W. Bill Young (R-FL) on Wednesday when he asked the congressman to support a bill that would raise the Minimum Wage to $10 an hour.

"Jesse Jackson, Jr. is passing a bill around to increase the minimum wage to 10 bucks an hour," the man told Young. "Do you support that?"

"Probably not," Young replied.

"Ten bucks....that would give us a living wage," the constituent pointed out.

"How about getting a job?" Young snapped.

"I do have one, for $8.50 an hour," the man insisted.

"Why do you want that benefit?" Young grumbled. "Get a job."

"I do have a job, but it's not enough to get by on," the man explained as Young turned away.

In 2010, the Florida Republican voted for a cost-of-living pay increase for himself and other members of Congress. He currently makes the default yearly Congressional salary of $174,000.

The prez can't control the price of gas but he can set the price of labor to the penny thru the magic of a Rose Garden signing ceremony. Well, why not $40/hr.??? Or are you just a bunch of cheap tightwads ?
How about$50/hr.?
Do I hear $60/hr.??

If you even mention the fact that raising minimum wage laws invariably lead to job loss you are dismissed or attacked as a heartless bastard. Demagoguery at its finest.

Wow....such distress at the mention of a living wage. So, how many in here could actually keep a household going at minimum wage even if both the husband and wife worked?

Apparently these people would rather use communist labor mentality when it comes to the lower working class in this country. For folks who love to bemoan socialism and communist ideology they seem to be all for it when it comes to the lower working class of this country. This same representative would rather these employers to dump millions into their campaign coffers than raise a man's salary by $2.50 an hour.

Nobody. Which is why raising it is pointless. It cannot be raised sufficiently to make it a viable method of supporting even oneself let alone a family. Meanwhile raising the wage inevitably leads to small businesses eliminating the jobs altogether. The way to help workers is to increase opportunities both in employment and in training/education to qualify for higher paying positions. Nobody can and nobody should be expected to support a family earning minimum wage. The goal should be to move such workers into higher paying positions. But again, to mention these things is to be attacked as heartless.

I don't believe there is such a thing as "the lower working class." My grandfather came here at 16 from the Ukraine speaking no English and immediately went to work in a shoe factory. He never got a high school diploma. He later owned his own fruit store. His son was a college graduate and his grandson became a lawyer. The very mentality that there is a permanent entrenched lower class is very English. I am NOT saying let everyone fend for themselves. I am saying the idea should be to help people move out of the "lower class" if they can. No country in the history of humanity has had more upward mobility than ours. I was watching the show "Downton Abbey." In the England of 1920 there were aristocratic classes, educated middle class professionals and the working class to whom a job as a servant in a good house was the best they could aspire to. One girl "hoped" to become a stenographer. Our country and our time is not like that. It is less like that now than it ever was.

It is the communist labor mentality that says once a prole always a prole. Not that different from the old class system we here in the U.S. broke away from. Abraham Lincoln's father was an illiterate backwoodsman. We know what happened after that.

Watching the video Rep. C.W. Bill Young (R-FL) is a real a$$-hole talking to one of his constituents

constituent asks:

"Jesse Jackson, Jr. is passing a bill around to increase the minimum wage to 10 bucks an hour," the man tells Young in a video obtained by FLDemocracy. "Do you support that?"

"Probably not," Young replies.

"Ten bucks, that would give us a living wage," the constituent points out.

Rep. C.W. Bill Young responds:

"How about getting a job?"

WTF....what kind of answer is that to the guy's question?

I certainly agree that that is a very stupid answer to why you are not supporting a rise in the minimum wage.

That's exactly the point. The man dismissed the questioner in a rude manner that makes him look like an ignorant fool. I'd never vote for someone who had so little respect for his constituents.

Me neither. And of course he makes it harder for others to explain why they might legitimately oppose an increase.

Why should people working like dogs for minimum wage get any increase in their paltry pay even as everything under the sun keeps going up and up in price. Nor should they get any kind of affordable health care insurance. Just let them live like pigs barely getting by eating Kraft Maccaroni and cheese or McDonalds dollar menus and then having to go to the emergency room when and if they get ill and probably never pay a dime because they can barely pay for a room much less an apartment or house or car and insurance. Let's just keep these people down where they belong or better yet let them become homeless as prices of everything keep going up while their measly pay and their zero benefits stay the same.

IMO if you don't raise minimum wage with the cost of living than it is less than a minimum living wage.

Suprised he didn't tell him its his fault he is only making 8.50 an hour and if he only paid better attention in high school he too could have been a congressman or a very large **** depending on your point of view.

70% of the American People said (in a Zogby Poll) that they would favor an increase in the Minimum Wage.

Ralph Nader nails the truth again.

Last time the minimum wage was increased, I got into a debate here on whether it would cause people to lose their jobs. He kept trying to convince me it wouldn't -- I said it did. He didn't know that a few days prior to our exchange I sat there and watched it happen.

Translation: the only way people will keep their jobs is if we have slave wages like China.
What a crock.

People earning a decent living wage didnt cause the economic collapse of this country. but republican scumbags like paul ryan [and others] are using unions as scapegoats for the deeds of greedy p.o.s. like the koch brothers, and those on wall street who poked holes in [dodd/frank] and dont want to see wall street regulated, and want financial institutions to take dangerous risks with no consequences, and still have the tax-payers bail them out.

No translation necessary. That's about as straightforward as it gets. I saw people lose their jobs.

I hear ya, those damn Democrats! If they had not taken control of congress in 2007 the minimum wage would still be $5.15 for all covered, nonexempt workers instead of the ridiculously high $7.25 it is now. Maybe Romney can get it repealed and rolled back to $1,00/hr.
