So let's review, it is discrimination, barring freedom of speech and religion and bigotry to try and not issue zoning permits to build a mosque.

However, if you are a job producing, highly active in community services company and happen to not believe in gay marriage it's totally fine to discriminate against them. Simply because of their owners and CEO religious beliefs (which is you, know, bigotry) and bar them from zoning permits, you know to build and create jobs, that's fine.

Illegal but apparently fine with Rahm Emanuel and Joe Moreno and the Mayor of Boston.

Well, we knew conservatives would be outraged by Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s and Ald. Joe Moreno’s plan to prevent Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in Logan Square, due to the company’s anti-gay marriage activism. And, of course, they are. Human Events calls the pair “totalitarian politicians.”
But Emanuel and Moreno are receiving equal condemnation from liberal commentators, who believe in the right to gay marriage, but believe equally in the right to free speech. Here’s what a few of them have to say.

Against abortions? Don't have one! Don't like smoking? Don't smoke! Ours is a great big world! You're not expected to like or approve of everything out there!
If you don't like Chick-Fil-A's policy's - by all means, don't go there! Just means more waffle fries for me!

Chick-fil-A has every right to do business in Chitown. The residents of that area have every right to eat there or not based upon their personal beliefs.

But the Mayor is the elected official for Boston and is supposed to speak for them isn't he? Personally, I never liked Chick-fil-A anyway and don't eat there. McDonalds has a much better chicken sandwich.

I'm not sure how you equate a mosque with a restaurant, but a building permit shouldn't be held up due to an owner's or CEO's religious beliefs as long as they're following the law. Personally I hope they get their permit and waste a bunch of money on a failing location, but they have every right to get their permit.

Wasn't trying to equate one with the other and you know it.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino won’t back down from his stance against Chick-fil-A, but he acknowledged Thursday that he cannot do anything to prevent the restaurant chain from setting up shop in Boston.

“Originally, I said I would do everything I can to stop them. And that was mostly using the bully pulpit of being mayor of the city and getting public support,” Menino said in an interview at City Hall. “But I didn’t say I would not allow them to go for permits or anything like that. I just said we would do everything we can, bully-pulpit wise.”

Menino caused a stir last week when he wrote an ireful letter to the restaurant chain’s president, Dan Cathy, who told the Baptist Press this month that his company is ‘‘guilty as charged’’ as a supporter of organizations rallying against same-sex marriage.

The letter drew intense reactions on both ends of the political spectrum. Since it was posted on the city’s Facebook page Wednesday, about 140,000 people have “liked” it.

But Thursday, Menino clarified his view, saying that it would not be within his power to take any steps to prevent the business from establishing a franchise in the city and he could not deny permits to the company. His only recourse, he said, is expressing his disapproval.

“Yes, people have criticized me, I understand that,” Menino said. “But I have feelings ... I have my First Amendment rights also. I’m expressing them.”

In so many words, didn't Obama just say something about the government being the the key to success for businesses? Doesn't seem so in this case.

No, but not suprised if that is what you think you heard.

Are you serious??? Whenever I face choosing between starvation and McDonalds - I go with starvation every single time! Uggh!
By the way, I find McDonalds' "home style chicken sandwich" to be a direct rip-off of a Chick-Fil-A!

Why is it a silly controversy that a municipality is denying a zoning permit to a private company based on the owner's political views? That seems to me to be an extremely important controversy.

Chick-fil-A and their owner have every right to say whatever they want and any of the consumer public who disagree with what they say and stand for have every right to drive down Chick-fil-A's profits by not going there and boycotting them. Very simple. They should not be denied any kind of permit that any other business would get because of their beliefs.

Where did it say they denied the company a permit?

Which municipality is denying them a permit?

It's the road to fascism and I don't use that term lightly. Anyone ever read the story "Harrison Bergeron" by Vonnegut?
