10 shot in front of Empire State Building

[Updated at 10:17 a.m. ET] Ten people were shot outside the Empire State Building, leaving two dead, including the gunman, New York City officials said.

A witness told CNN she saw a man lying in the middle of the street surrounded by police.

"I saw blood on the sidewalk," Rebecca Fox said. "It was a very surreal scene."

[Updated at 10:09 a.m. ET] A suspect started shooting outside the Empire State Building this morning, killing at least one person, New York city officials say.

The suspect had a "large gun," a witness told CNN.

[Updated at 9:55 a.m. ET] - At least 10 people were shot Friday in front of the Empire State Building in New York Friday morning, the New York Office of Emergency Management said.

A suspect in the shooting was shot and killed by police, New York police said.

Authorities converged on the building around 9 a.m. after reports of gunfire.

A witness told CNN's Rose Arce that the gunman ran after and shot a man in the head. An unarmed guard chased the gunman away, the witness told Arce.

Police have closed several several streets around 5th Avenue and 34th Street in Manhattan.

New York resident Max Kaplan, 22, said he heard at least nine gunshots. He said several ambulances have arrived at the scene.

"We're all very shaken up at the office," he said.

The Empire State Building is one of the most famous skyscrapers in the world, and one of New York City's best-known tourist attractions.

Each year, about 4 million people visit the building's two observation decks. At more than 1,453 feet tall, the landmark building reaches more than a quarter-mile into the sky.

They don't live in NYC. The police dropped him pretty quickly though.

the madness will never end until the day human beings are perfected which of means never...the truth is 20 years ago here in NYC 2300 people were murdered and for the recent past the numbers have been in the neighborhood of 500....these kinds of tragedies are sadly impossible to stop

My son was a block away shortly after it happened, he said he never saw so many cops in his life, thought we were under attack again.

It was personal. The shooter was fired by the man he shot and he held a grudge. He shot his ex-boss, then tried to walk away, but a construction worker saw the shooting, followed him and then alerted cops who he saw nearby. The cops he saw were terrorism task force police (guarding NYC landmarks) and they are the ones who told the shooter to stop, the shooter then pulled out his 45 one more time and tried to shoot the cops, they shot back, (people on the scene say they got off 15 rounds) most believe it was the cops who shot the bystanders while they were pumping 15 rounds into the shooter.

As long as guns continue to be a religion in this country, I don't see any end.

Until the facts come out I wouldn't be so quick to judge and blame the cops. 15 rounds, I dare anyone to be able to count the shots they heard and be accurate. You shoot off a round in an urban area and echos everywhere. Until they check the shooters gun and the cops guns, then the truth will come out.

absolutely correct....he had a nice legally purchased weapon.... he was a very nice guy when he bought it 20years ago... but humans break every day from life's pressures.....
remarkable how stupid people really are.......
maybe we should just let 5 year old kids play with matches & gasoline too.... they're perfectly legal.... it's long past time to do away with gun ownership (guess folks need 'em because they're all part of a "well regulated militia).... but i guess this belongs in the whipping post section, so i'll stop...

With these tragedies increasing more and more maybe we should start sending the 5 year old kids out to the park or matinee movie packing because you just never know whensomeone is gonna blow you away. This country is regressing when it come to guns and violence. It is like the wild west out there.

I was gonna say it, but I'm tired of getting jumped on by 5 or 6 gunner boys.

Turns out this guy wasn't a mass murderer. He was just out to shoot the guy he killed. Every single other person shot were shot by the police crossfire. Still disturbing but at least it wasn't another whacko just looking to shoot everyone in sight.

http://news.yahoo.com/nypd-empire-state-victims-hit-police-gunfire-18084438 7.html

They got 10 bullets into Mr. Johnson and 5 went elsewhere, three direct hits on other people and 7 others injured by fragments. Mr. Johnson only had a 45 with 8 shots. One of the cops, P.O. Matthews had actually sued the city earlier this year because he was being harassed for not writing his quota of tickets. I don't think he lashed out in anger, but the stress of the higher ups harassing him that he was not doing his job well enough may have had an impact on why he knew he had to catch or take down the shooter. It is also the first time either of the cops had fired their weapons, now that's some stress.

I hope that the people who always yell about police brutality will not start their rant, but it doesn't appear that any of the people who were shot were black, otherwise we'd have Al Sharpton right out there marching to 1 Polce Plaza. The injuries to the bystanders were accidental and should be regarded as such.
