Be careful with any emails with attachments from friendly names. I've rec'd several from folks here on HTW with subjects such as Hello or None. I emailed a friend who was supposedly the sender of one & he said he definately did not send it. He said he has also rec'd the same messages. So far the only link is HTW....possibly from the recent hack. Has anyone else encountered this?

This sh!t is running rampant right now. I've never in my life have had so much nasty crap going on with my computer. Relentless Pop-ups, viruses, RAM depleting programs, programs not responding, Can't log-off, can't log on...you name it I've had it the last 2 weeks or so. BE CAREFUL especially when opening e-mail attachments...

We must be twins, Eddie. That crap has been happening to me constantly the last few weeks. Yesterday I had 28 emails with attachments that needed to be deleted. The damn pop ups are annoying, and my 'puter seems very sloooooooow lately.....

That was me that Donny thought sent him an e-mail with an attachment but I didn't. The addy he received it at wasn't even the one I have for him in my Outlook address book, it's not even on the computer I've been running lately. I am running Norton 2004 anti-virus scanning both incoming and outgoing and my virus definitions are updated...weird. I also received a returned mail that I didn't send from a user I recognized from this site. His addy isn't on my comp either. Somebody's comp is being remotely used or the bad guys have harvested e-mail addy's from here. The most garbage like this I have ever seen...make sure you are protected.

I wish the freaks who do this would get a new hobby.

Well, first of all, update your anti-virus. If you don't have one, or your service is expired, try using AVG Antivirus. Google it and you'll find it. They have a very effective freeware version that I use and I've been very happy with it. Make sure you uninstall your previous Antivirus programs, like Norton and McAfee. Norton, you will probably have to do some manual registry work to completely eliminate it, but it's well worth it. There's links on the Symantec site showing you step by step how to do it.

Next go to: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ . Download the free AdAware program, load it, update it and run it. You can find detailed instructions for set up here: http://help.lockergnome.com/index.php?showtopic=11785 It looks complicated, but it's not.

Next go to: http://www.safer-networking.org/ and download Spybot Search and Destroy, install it, and click Search for Updates. Download the updates and run the System scan.

There are other pay-fer programs that'll do it too, but I figure if it's free, it's for me! The latter 2 programs will search your harddrive for little nasties that cause system slowdowns, Webpage redirects, Popups and all kinds of crap. Spybot will even lock your homepage from being changed by a nasty on the Net, as well as protect IE from programs that cause popups on startup and things like that. Since I installed and run those programs in the last year my computing experience has been great.

To find out more about pop ups and other crapola on the Net, check out: http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

Ahoy mates, Id say update your virus protection and hold onto your hats. Nasty virus goin around. Probably worse than SOBIG so screw the attachments, just delete em for now & protect yourself. Good time to re-new all your back up discs.

I would say you are clean. The way these viruses work is they grab random addresses from the infected computers address book and plug names into the to: and from: fields then send them off. The infected computer is hard to find but it looks like clean computers are infected. I chased one like this down a year or so ago on a bunch of computers. No need to panic, just keep your Antivirus up to date and stay informed. I also recomend some flavor of Norton Internet Security.

I'm getting these here in Canada too, at home and work (which is supposed to be virus proof). I knew something was up when I was getting emails from the "postmaster" saying undeliverable mail, to someplace I never emailed.

Keep your eyes peeled on this one. Thanks for the info Finklewicz

If you didn't have your virus definitions up to date and you think you have been infected, you should run The W32.Novarg.A@mm Removal Tool. This will tell you if you have been infected, remove the virus and fix any problems caused by the virus.

It's free from Norton.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.rem oval.tool.html

Sometimes you have to use a removal tool to completely rid yourself of a virus.

Like finklewicz I use the AVG virus software and it's really easy to use and it gets updated about once a week or so. Spybot search and destroy is an essential program too.
There's a program out called AdMuncher and it's really good but it's only free for 120 days then they want you to pay for a copy so you can get a serial #. It takes up bandwidth too.

I received two emails....Norton grabbed them both...One had a subject line like adsfklsdgflsglsfhg...So i obviuosly thought something was screwy, but the second looked like I have emailed to a bad email address...It said Return Mail- System Adminstrator...I have gotton those before but they were legit..Norton grabbed it...Keep an eye open for that...

yeah, this messages are tricky - they *appear* to be from a system admin and the trick you into beliving you have emailed someone and it is getting returned to you.

pretty savy stuff if you can find beauty in chaos.

i recommend the same Norvarg removal tool just like Tuna did along with a fresh update of your virus defs. for more info see my computer thread in the basement.

We've gotten six of those emails so far, none related to HTW. We deleted them all without opening and are still virus-free at this point. I don't open any email with attachments unless I'm expecting it, and I know exactly what it is ahead of time...even if it's from a familiar source. If I think it might have been important I'll email the sender and ask them what it was in case they need to resend it. I get lots of attachments at work of course, but those are supposedly "safe", and if not we have IT people on site who can fix things. No such luxury at home so I'm extra careful. Call me paranoid if you want but I've never had a virus on my home PC.
