It would appear that we now live in a society where this type of thing is a legitimate risk that we have to live with.

Totally agree, Julie. This is insane and abhorrent behavior. When did it become OK to just kill people?

you answered your own question. Best response is to lighten up, try to be compassionate, put love and kindness into practice, and stop adding to the madness in our own ways, events like this are just the collective society pressure cooker blowing off steam, or else kaboom apocalypse we all go down in flames. Because everyone is pissed off and on edge now.

OK, so much for the cosmic debris, bring on the gun debate.

Agreed. Put a little love in your heart. It is badly needed.

Think about that hate spike you feel when someone pulls a rude move in traffic. You know the vibe. Doesn't seem like much, but compound that by the power of a whole planet full of angry people. That is the juice that is powering these nightmares, and we are all directly involved. The people who start pulling the triggers are just weak-willed puppets, we are pulling the strings.

While I agree with you guys, I also think it shines a light on just how much we as a society have all but forgotten and neglected our mental health system in this country.

Mental illness and our current gun control laws are a bad combo. But I agree with you; people who are "looking for a reason" will no more find it here than with the nanny in NYC who killed the two kids. There is no reason; just insanity.

And yes; the mental health system is failing; but amazingly no one, no matter how crazy can me medicated against their own will

there is just nothing I can imagine that could ever get me to opening fire on a bunch of grade school children!!!! holy crap!!!!! anger is one thing and apparently there was more than one person involved and these were 24 year old people. This wasnt some student who was bullied or someone trying to cop pharmaceuticals. Tough to imagine. already 27 people dead.

my heart goes out to all of us.

True. Dollars to donuts this creep was on SSRI's. All too often people who require intensive therapy and/or hospitalization are simply fed SSRI's (prozac, zoloft, etc) while the root causes of the depression go untreated. These drugs are great if used in conjunction with counseling and therapy, but can be deadly if the person is left on their own.

Interesting article on SSRI's and mass killings: http://www.encognitive.com/node/886

here is a list of school shootings/incidents associated with SSRI's, just one of several lists of SSRI tragedies.

there's the old chicken/egg quandry. Do SSRI's do this or do people capable of doing this end up on SSRI's? Either way, mental health is not treated kindly by most health insurance plans

Looks like SSRI use was the chicken, gonzo murder sprees the egg, the following quote is from the article linked in my post, Dr. Moira Dolan, of the Medical Accountability Network:

quote:
The string of school shootings that we have seen is strictly a phenomena that coincides with the massive use of antidepressant drugs over the past 15 to 20 years. It was not something that was seen in the 20 years earlier. In the 20 years that we have seen an increase in mass murders and people who are chemically altered by antidepressant medications, there’s been nothing but an increase in gun control. [Also, crimes have become more bizarre and in some cases unimaginable.]

again, take a sec and look at this list of school tragedy/SSRI use, it doesn't seem to be much of a mystery to me

We all are responsible. We have become self-centered, consumers with no fear of God. We reap what we sow. Immoral lifestyles are the norm and people avoid God and church so they can live like that and not feel guilty.

On the contrary, I've found some of the worst and most violent offenders came from a very strict religious upbringing. Organized religion has been responsible for more deaths throughout history than anything other than disease.

On the contrary you have found nothing of the sort. You are known for your blabbering whether it be a fence fund, a PM thread with postings you admit you don't live by or humping books to forum members. You are a loudmouth who makes things up to look good.
