with the talk of the impending Duane retrospective in time for the Beacon,
was wondering if the current incarnation will give a nod to the seminal classic
'Brothers and Sister' or try to downplay it due to it being a Dickey country flavored
album

After all, come August, it will be the 40th anniversary of it's release

thoughts?

No way they play the whole thing( ramblin' man, pony boy-no way,lol)....
They already do southbound, jessica, wasted words, come and go....
I will hold out hope for jelly jelly, which I don't think they have ever played. A jelly jelly with Chuck would be sweet.....

"Pony Boy" w/ Derek, Warren, who has vocal duties as well and Butch on "Ham bone"..would be pretty cool. Through in a little Chuck Leavell...and that could be sweet.

That would be sweet! Hell, I'd love to hear this band take on Rambling Man. But, like 0013 said, no way does it happen...

Never understood why playing Rambling man is any different than playing anything else Dickey betts wrote for the band. (Liz reed, jessica, blue sky) What's the big deal ?

Is this where we start the "Dickey sitting in at the Beacon" rumor?

Is there anything lower than zero?

fender31, I think Ramblin' Man is widely considered Dickey's "signature tune" and ever since he left the band, I've always assumed that was the one song that the ABB would never, ever play again.

Blue Sky is the only song that Dickey sang that this lineup has ever played, and I think that is a whole different story than playing a Betts instrumental like Liz Reed or Jessica. As we have heard from various interviews over the years, even playing Blue Sky was something the band did very grudgingly and they haven't played it more than a few times.

Frankly, I just don't see it working without Dickey. I'd rather hear Nobody Knows or True Gravity. If this lineup decides to bring more Betts material back into the rotation, those two would be better suited to the band.

I really liked the blue sky they played this summer and yeah Rob Nobody knows/true gravity would be awesome. I think the band should just write new songs so derek and warren don't have to keep playing dickey/duane tunes all the time.

Brothers & Sisters could be nicely expanded by adding Berry's jam and Ramblin' Man played at the originally intended speed (see the Johnny Sandlin book for the story)

Yeah, would be cool indeed if this CD get's and expanded Deluxe Edition release. With the aforementionted tracks added as bonus songs on disc 1 and a soundboard show from '73 on disc 2.
It was a huge commercial hit back then but i guess Butch and Gregg aren't to keen on revisiting a landmark album from Dickey's heyday. Well, a man can dream.......

They could do Brothers and Sisters if they wanted to and I really don't see why not, if they're gonna be playing Dickey signatures like Liz Reed and Jessica anyway. Warren could sing Ramblin' Man and do a great job of it.

Doubtful and that's a shame considering the past few beacon runs have had one " anniversary " hook or another. The 40th being the best and then the fillmore and Year of the Peach. To not acknowledge their biggest seller since it's so Betts heavy would be lame IMO but once the band starts up an the lights go down, I tend to forget any of the arguments on the fan sites....

Would love to see it myself though. Even is Butch and Gregg don't want to mention it, I bet Warren and Derek will throw in a nod to Dickey and Bros and Sisters on Jessica....

All reports from the weekend from objective sources claim that the Man in the Hat is in fine form and Andy Aledort jammed with the Mule the night before New Years.....

The speculation continues for another season. Que up Mike Francessa to tell me that it won't happen and that i'm stupid for even thinking such nonsense !

Acknowledging it and playing it in it's entirety are two different things. At Fillmore East and Eat a Peach were more practical to pull off (there was essentially one sticky song....and they band did it justice and then some).

I bet it get acknowleged and maybe even celebrated but not to the same extent.

the remaining originals should pay tribute to, if that album had flopped after Duane's passing there might not have been much of an ABB.... that Album made them "quote -unquote" stars

And Brothers & Sisters also made later versions of the band after 1989 seem that much more viable, because the band had been a big hit without two Allman brothers being in the group. Having such success post-original lineup made future lineups seem more legit (probably not explaining myself well)

Brothers & Sisters is quintessential Dickey Betts with some great Chuck Leavell thrown in. How can they play the whole album without Dickey? I just don't see it happening. I saw them do Blue Sky last summer and while Derek is a phenomenal guitar player. His sound doesn't fit the song at all.

Spot on....I think they've stretched the bounds already in acknowledging this album, as well as other Dickey tunes, Southbound, E Reed, Jessica, Les Bres, Revival, No one left to run with...etc. I'm glad they do what they already do, but to focus entirely on that album would be a "tribute" to Dickey Betts and not just a celebration of Brothers and Sisters, so that would be a bit strange IMO.

"while Derek is a phenomenal guitar player. His sound doesn't fit the song (Blue Sky) at all."

To each their own, but I couldn't disagree more.

I thought Derek played great on this song during the Dickey/Derek days, when it was still in heavy rotation.

The final United Palace show, I think it is 3/20/10, features Derek playing probably my second-favorite Blue Sky solo I've ever heard, after Duane's solo on the 9/19/71 Stonybrook version, which is the gold standard.

Oh well, you say pot-ay-to and I say pot-ah-to....

I hear ya, Rob.
But for some, it's a matter of the real thing vs. an imitator. Would you rather have seen Miles Davis or some guy who could play his stuff note for note? Just for the sake of discussion.

Well Rusty, I always think of Derek taking Duane's solo on Blue Sky, not Dickey's. I would never say that Derek is a good "replacement" for Dickey's sound--Warren can "do Dickey" much better on tunes like Blue Sky and Jessic.

Since Duane isn't around anymore, Derek is the next best thing.
