JJ Grey & Mofro have announced plans to release a new album, This River, on April 16. The new album is Grey's seventh overall, and first since 2010's Georgia Warhorse. Produced by Grey and Dan Prothero, and recorded at Retrophonics Studio in Saint Augustine, Florida, a majority of the record was cut live by Grey and the band in the studio. Says Grey: "It adds so much more to the dynamic of a recording. It's so different when you get to play off each other rather than overdub each track".
To promote the record, band will hit the road this Spring for dates in the U.S. and Europe. They'll be performing with The Slide Brothers, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, and Eric Krasno at various stops on the road. "This time around there's no learning curve," says Grey. "We'll be ready from the git-go."

I'm gonna hit either DC or NYC or Burlington. If these guys are near you, go see them! They put on a great show.

Doesn't look like I will be able to catch any of that tour Tennessee on a Saturday is at least technically possible, but that is a good 6-8 hour round trip from Atlanta, which is tough even for a weekend.

I mainly posted to echo Brendan's sentiments, this band is the absolute real deal and one of the best live shows going right now. Based on the show I saw in Atlanta right before NYE, I agree with JJ"s comment...

No need to talk about "potential" anymore when it comes to Mofro. They have arrived, and are one of the best bands in America.

Isaac -

If you can, by all means get to St. Andrews to see them. I used to see Mule there frequently when I lived there. One of my favorite venues.

A few years ago the ABB summer tour had (get this) the Drive By Truckers and Mofro as the openers on one bill. I don't recall if it was Charlotte or Raleigh but JJ came out and they played "Smoke Stack Lightening". That was awesome.

Really wish I could do the St Andrews show but on a weekday, I doubt it will happen

Your review of one of their shows was what got me to go see them in VA in 2011. One of the many things I love about this site. Getting turned onto good music ideas from people who know and you can trust.

Seeing these guys in NYC on Saturday! $22 to see a kick-ass band in NYC, can't beat it.

Rob, I'll try to put up a quick review on Sunday.

I really like my first few listens to the new album! I think Todd's excellent bass playing adds to my enjoyment, quite honestly...

I can't blame you Michael, I think Todd has really blossomed with Mofro. This will be heresy to some DTB diehards, but I've never appreciated Tood's bass playing more than I have the past two times I saw Mofro.

Something about their in-the-pocket groove really seems to fit Todd's style. I'm very happy Todd got such a good gig after DTB, both musically and in the sense that JJ is one of the coolest folks in the music business.

So, I though this bad kicked a$$ when I saw them in 2011.

They played 1000 times better on Saturday night! I can't believe how tight they sound right now. Just terrific. I don't think they had a horm section when I saw them last, but they have one now and they are off the hook! Unfortunately, Saturday night was the last night in the US before they head to Europe, but make sure you see these guys when they come back around.
