I was listening to some Jefferson Airplane music recently... Their first album featured a female vocalist named Signe Anderson. Her vocals was ok but nothing to write home about. Eventually in late 1966, Signe left permanently (maternity leave), and was replaced by Grace Slick. Grace Slick had a lot more stage presence and personality. She was a dynamic singer, and really moved the group forward in popularity and ambition. Grace was the secret weapon the Airplane needed.

What other bands benefitted when they hired a new member (frequently as a replacement for a leaving member)?

It's two members but the Mac added two pieces that took them to another place .

Staying away from the obvious ABB examples:

Dio brought new life to Black Sabbath in 1980.
Bruce Dickenson and Adrian Smith were great additions to Iron Maiden.
Steve Gaines was a great addition to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Ian Gillian & Roger Glover with Deep Purple.
Joe Walsh & the Eagles (particularly since B.Leadon was leaving anyhow)
Javier Colon then Mike Mattison with the dTb.

Tons more. Those just off the top of my head.

Well, obviously they were a great band already and ridiculously successful, but to my ears, the Stones sound went to another level after Mic Taylor joined the band as a replacement.

Personally I thought the Dead benefitted when they subtracted Mickey & it was just Bill K on drums -- and Keith & Donna came aboard

Scarlet Begonias was on the radio this morning -- my but that girl could sing -- heavenly

Jayhawks are a band I've liked over the last 20 years. Ed O'Reagan was a great addition on drums and vocals. When the reunited a couple of years ago it was with the brief, albeit definitive, 1995 lineup. Definitely the strongest lineup.

Steve Howe was a great addition to Yes.
Neal Peart with Rush (though it's hard not to think of him as an original member)
Michael Schenker and Paul Raymond with UFO.
John Frusciante with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers
And I'll second Buckingham & Nicks in Fleetwood Mac (love Rumous, FM, Tusk....though some of you say they ruined the band!)

I'll state an obvious one here;

The best thing the Brothers could have done after losing Duane was add Chuck Leavell.

The Crowes have made many additions that benefitted the band. The definitive lineup to me includes Marc Ford & Eddie Harsch, neither being original.

Although I liked Andy Hess and his jazzy style I think his replacement Jorgen Carlson brought that heavy bottom end back to Gov't Mule.

Not so much that they ruined the band, but they so over re-vamped the style of the music that they really (IMO) should have just re-named the band at that point. The end result was more Buckingham-Nicks than Fleetwood Mac. I guess the 'Mac name had more recognition or something. Still a great band, but not a rose by another name.

Different strokes for different folks. I'd say you can't even call it the same band.

There's two seperate questions here possibly. One stream is adding a new player to an already exisitng core band. The other is replaciing an outgoing member with someone new. In each case the addition has to improve the band from the immediate iteration that precedes it. Some examples from the bands I like:

Additions:

Jake Cinninger joins Umphrey's McGee
Marc Quinones joins the ABB
Jim Gordon joins Traffic
Keith and Donna join the Grateful Dead
Bruce Hornsby joins the Grateful Dead
Jim Loughlin re-joins moe.
Count M'Butu joins the DTB
Mitch Stein joins the Steve Kimock Band
Picking up Duane Allman for their studio sessions worked out well for Derek and the Dominos.

Replacements:

Jimmy Herring for George McConnell in Widespread Panic (the single biggest upgrade on my list - and I liked Geroge)
Luther Dickenson for Paul Stacey in the Black Crowes
Brent Mydland for Keith in the Grateful Dead (Keith was declining quickly at the time)
I personally prefer the Jeff Coffin Flecktones to the Howard Levy Flecktones - but that opinion is perhaps not consensus.
Kofi Burbidge for Bill McKay in the DTB
An unfair example as it was and is a rotating cast rather than a band - but Warren Haynes replacing Jeff Pevar in Phil and Friends solidified a line-up that stayed together for 3+ years.
Alphonso Johnson for Bobby Vega in the Steve Kimock Band - though many Kimock junkies would disagree.

That was my first thought. They were a small to medium size venue blues band comprised some of Santana's former band. Someone was praising the virtues of how great Neil Schon is in another thread the other day. I always thought he was good, not great myself. Just my opinion. But he was in the right place at the right time when they added Steve Perry, and BOOM- Arena Rock band of the early 80's. Say what you will about Perry, but his FM radio hit vocals made those guys a lot of cash.

Agreed. Those two are responsible for a 180 degree turn....

When I think of this topic and a band"benefiting", I kinda think of a game changer, making an impact, new dimension, noticeable positive etc....

Neil Peart replacing John Rutsey.
