Big V,

Guns (the ease of which they can be obtained) are part of the problem... but your point is extremely valid.

Mental Health issues always seem to be brushed aside(especially when the media is discussing mass shootings & crime). But it is one of the largest problems we face here in the U.S.

Yes, it IS a gun problem. One that is exacerbated by your point, but a gun problem nonetheless.

A gun problem in the sense there was not a legally carrying gun owner nearby to stop these animals.

yes, we have a gun and mental illness problem
we have a violence problem in general.
no, we shouldn't ban guns, but we should apply "common sense"

it's too easy for people with mental illness problems to get guns - not just guns, but "military style" weapons (I agree that the definition may be arbitrary ) with large capacities.

it's been said that an experienced shooters can reload quickly so the size of the magazine doesn't matter. The guy that shot Gabby Giffords and killed several others was tackled while re loading.

It's been said that if someone had a gun when an incident happened, the shooter would have been killed sooner.
please consider this-
the guy in the movie theater in CO had body armor on. shooting him would have exposed more people to crossfire.
There was a shooting in NYC last year, near the empire state building. As many, or more, people got shot in the crossfire between the cops and the shooter than the shooter himself shot.
Policeman hit their target about 1 out of 8 times (source - Time magazine). Other than the military, they have among the most training in firearms. We all have heard stories of cops shooting an unarmed suspect by mistake, we all have heard of soldiers being killed by frienldy fire. That is only more likely to happen if we have everyone armed and pulling out a gun at the perception of trouble.

The US has much, much higher rates of firearm homicide than countries like Canada and the UK because in Canada and the UK there is no mental illness.

Guns helped us get our freedom, and they are the only thing keeping it. Those that want to take the guns also want to take your freedom. There is a reason we still have our freedom, what is left of it, and it is the fact that there are so many guns in the USA. Without the guns, we would be China. Now off to the WP >>>>

Not sure if you were joking or not, but this is seriously true for me. I am an ass, but at least I realize that I am an ass and I try not to put myself in situations where I could do serious harm. Constantly pissing people off is trouble enough.

In addition to no mental illness - there is also no freedom in Canada and the UK.

Guns do not kill people. People kill people...which is why we need to reform gun control to include strict psychological exams taken every 4 years if you want to own one. Want to drive a car? Pass your driver's exam every 4 years. Want to own a gun? Pass the psychological exam every 4 years.

I know someone who suffers from bipolar disorder, who has severe anger and has violent tendencies. When he applied to become a police officer with the Philadelphia Police Department and NYPD, he was turned down because he failed the psychological exams both times. They WORK!

Let me see how this works. Are you a member of the Republican Party or Tea Party, sorry you failed, no gun for you.

I am sure it would work much in the same way the IRS is head hunting the opposition party, no thanks!

To my understanding, it is against the law for alcoholics, drug addicts and those with mental illness to own firearms

My question: WHO determines if a person fals into one of these categories? A doctor? A judge?

Believe me , I know several people who fit into one or more category who own firearms.

Having said all of that, there were PLENTY of laws in effect that should have prevented the recent Washington DC shooter from wreaking his carnage. But somehow, they were not enforced.

You don't have a very good understanding of the disease of addiction, that is for sure. You either die with it, or from it, there is no cure. That would mean anyone who attends an AA or NA meeting should not be able to own a gun? Maybe you are referring to a felony conviction?

First of all, I have had some very up close and personal relations with addicts - including friends and a couple of very close family members . I don't know what your experience is, but I PROMISE you I can equal or top any tale you can spin!

Feel free to check the gun laws yourself. I don't know if it's a national law or not, but in my former home of Alabama the laws are exactly as I stated. I'm sure the intention is more to keep guns out of the hands of unstable people than to prevent addicts from protecting themselves.

You are correct. I just don't know how they test for such a thing? Or do they?

Federal law establishes the baseline regarding the types of persons who are ineligible to purchase firearms. The federal Gun Control Act of 1968, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 922, prohibits the sale of firearms to any person who:

•Is underage;2
•Has been convicted of, or is under indictment for, a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year;
•Is a fugitive from justice;
•Is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance;
•Has been adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution;3
•Is an illegal alien;
•Has been dishonorably discharged from the military;
•Has renounced his or her U.S. citizenship;
•Is subject to a court order restraining him or her from harassing, stalking or threatening an intimate partner, his or her child or a child of a partner or engaging in other conduct that would place an intimate partner in reasonable fear of bodily injury to the partner or child;4 or
•Has been convicted of a misdemeanor offense of domestic violence

Why didn't we think of this before? After all, the criminals and thugs will be lining up to take this test.

Gun laws aren't meant to keep the guns out of the hands of the crooks (see Chicago).

Their culture and ours are different in so many ways, beyond guns, that I don't really see how we would ever really resemble China.

The form you fill out to buy a gun specifically mentions marijuana.

Typical Reefer Madness moron logic there.
