Not a question of who's better, but which is more to your taste.

For me,Howlin is raw, gritty, dark, dangerous, almost animalistic,on the edge, razor wire sounding guitar,angry,sad...he sets the tone and the moods.

Muddy is rollicking,raunchy,sexual,commanding,dominating,melodic,confident...he's in charge and knows exactly what the music needs to be.

Both are pure blues and what I gotta have in my musical diet, each played depending on the state of mind and sound I'm seeking at the moment.Tonight it's Muddy.

personally, I'm a huge Hubert Sumlin fan, so I' probably listen more to Howling Wolf than Muddy. finally got to see Hubert a few years ago at Levon's barn. Also met Levon's dog (muddy)that night.

Perhaps we need a battle of the bands vote?

As a body of work, Muddy's recordings are probably the electric blues I'd want to take to desert island. But Wolf's best records are so powerful and menacing that they make my hair stand up. And when I went through a divorce 15 years ago, Wolf's music (and R.L. Burnside's) was the music I turned to the most. I'd put Big Foot Chester Burnett's "Smokestack Lightning," "Killing Floor," "I Asked for Water," "Commit a Crime," and a few others up against any music, period. And that includes Beethoven.

Love 'em both, but you can tell my preference by my signature below.

I always thought Muddy's style was more polished - if that can even be said about a blues player. Wolf's vocals definitely do send a shiver up the spine!

Choosing between the two is like choosing between steak and ribs ... you're gonna be satisfied either way!

I've got a Muddy live CD that listen to quite a bit. Muddy is fun and likes to have a good time. I'm sure Howlin' does the same. Cheers!

Tough call.

Gotta go with Howlin though.
