I just finished it last night also and I have to say it's the most incredible read. For even the hardest ABB-nut, you will find that none of the other books (with the greatest of respect to all of them, I have enjoyed every single one) manage to bring the character of Duane to life quite as much as Galadrielle has done. Foibles and all, you do come away from the last page feeling as if you've joined her on a journey to discover who Duane was and what made him tick.

It's a very personal book for her and in a sense I almost felt voyeuristic as I read some of the more intimate details, it almost felt like I was overstepping a mark somewhere, just reading the words. Even reading his letters felt like I was stepping into Duane's personal space, which is an odd feeling to have, being just a fan of the music. I feel blessed to have heard Duane's guitar playing and blessed to have been able to read a book that brings his personality and character into full vivid clarity.

Galadrielle is a terrific writer and I hope she will continue to put pen to paper...

J.

For me the book started as a fun read that turned into an emotional read. Watery eyes at the end much like watching and listening to Gregg, Butch and Galadrielle at the Mushroom stage at Wanee.

Agree with above comments, especially the one about the character of Duane coming to life. I felt as if I knew the man.
I had read other accounts of the Allmans and Duane. Randy Poe's book is very good.
Even if you read those, I highly recommend getting this one and One Way Out.

as a side note, I was also saddened, but not surprised, that Duane's edict about needles wasn't heeded when he was alive (I knew it wasn't after he was gone)

Incredible book . Check out the audio version also. She recorded it which not all authors do since it's way more difficult and time consuming than you'd think.

We're lucky to have two great books about the band this year. Please Be with Me is beautifully written and the level of detail is incredible. You will never get a clearer picture of the Allman family and how Duane and Gregg became the people they did, particularly because you find out so much about Mama A. If you didn't live in the Big House I don't think you'll ever get a better idea of what it was like to be there and be part of the band's inner circle during its formative years. These people are musical legends for a reason and we've come to know them one way through music and interviews and at show, but this is a much more intimate picture.

"Oh but the sight of that guitar, like a quiet sentinel on its stand . . ."

It's passages like the above - from Linda Oakley to Galadrielle about Duane's Les Paul at his funeral - that stopped me in my tracks. Won't be forgetting it anytime soon.

There's a tremendous amount of love -AND respect- that's extended to Galdarielle from Duane's old friends. You can literally FEEL it flipping through the pages of the book, as they try to shed some light on who her father really was aside from the music. Which we more or less find out is impossible, because he WAS music.

Also thought Duane's letter regarding the Dominos was priceless, as well as him meeting Otis Redding's wife.

The letter where Duane wrote a giant run-on sentance with the comment that he quit taking speed tucked in there, followed later on where he describes the newly formed ABB as playing " music to **** by " had me absolutely rolling on the floor.

That type of insight, particularly via the multitude of hand-written letters showcased, was something I was not expecting.

It has been several years since I visited this site or posted. I am looking forward to reading Galadrielle's new book in the future. Don't have a copy yet. Have no doubt it is very well written with great new information about a musical hero.

I finished it a month ago and was astonished at how great and how personal it was. And it kind of makes sense for it to be more personal than any other ABB book..........who else other than family could get people like Johnny Sandlin, Rick Hall, Donna Allman and Linda Oakley to open up about Duane the way they did to Galadrielle? Excellent review that you posted as well.
