Just the other day a new ARU show was uploaded to Archive.org, which is like a High Holy Day to me

In this case, it's even better because it's a show I was at! Here is a link to the show, 4/30/04 in New Orleans...

https://archive.org/details/aru2004-04-30.picklemic.flac1648

This was part of a NO Jazz Fest spectacular billed as "The Bayou Rendesvous: Zambi All-Stars vs. New Orleans All-Stars" or something like that.

April 30th is Bruce's birthday, or so he says, and this was a big all-star night of music in his honor, alternating various Bruce-related projects on the one hand, and all-star groups of New Orleans musicians on the other hand.

I will always remember that night because I got to see George Porter and Jimmy Herring jam together. Have mercy! That was some good stuff.

Anyway, this ARU show might be the best "reunion" show of the 2000s. It has some really, really strong versions of their classic tunes like Working On A Building and Compared To What, plus an absolutely scorching Time Is Free that gets to some weird places. The only ARU show with Jeff Mosier and Johnny Neal, I'm sure of it. Don't even need to look that one up!

Enjoy!

Thanks for posting. For you ARU fans near Atlanta, it appears Matt Mundy is going to play nearby on the 18th. He currently works at Sawnee Mt. Music in Cumming, and they do some shows off the back porch.

Thank you Rob. Will check this out.

Blooby, if you come in for Matt, give me a call.

Brock, I won't make it. I'm heading to South Florida the week before and Alabama/Alpharetta for Phish. I don't suppose you're going to the latter?

So did anybody catch Matt Mundy? I was out of town on vacation, or I would have seriously considered going. It's great that he is playing out again. I would love to hear a report. Has he kept his chops up, or is he rusty? Did he just play bluegrass standards, or his own tunes? Inquiring minds want to know!

By the way, upon further listening the show in the original post really is special. Oteil and Jimmy just come out of the gate swinging on Working On A Building and Compared To What and get right to business. Both songs maintain an incredible energy level and intensity all the way through.

One sign of a good ARU show is when they bust into little odd improv jams thoughout the night, and there are several here. The spirit of Zambiland was in the house that night!
