Am I the only one who thinks this album is freakin' brilliant?

I'm a longtime Truckers fan and I've loved Jason's contributions to the DBT but this record proves that he is an incredible songwriter.

Damn. I love this album !

It is a good album, but I think you might have it pointed in the wrong direction. A slight shift more to the direction that the sun rises rather than sets and you'll have the album title.

My only complaint about the album is the f-bomb in "Elephant", I'm definitely not opposed to cussing in a song however I think this instance takes away from what is an excellent song.

I'm a long time Jason Isbell fan. I saw him live this year. His grandmother was in the audience. He introduced her, and played her favorite from the album, "Tired of Being Alone." then later dropped the F bomb in "Elephant" His live shows are so intimate.

My favorite from Southeastern.

Southeastern is also about 10x better than the most recent Drive By Truckers album. That one was a disappointment to me.

It's a beautiful cd and I still listen to it, even though it's about a year old now.

All 4 of his post DBT albums have been very good. I saw his previous album, Here We Rest, on a list of all-time essential Americana records (basically releases of the past 15 years).

And the Southeastern tracks turned out even better live with the 400 Unit.

Seeing him at the Fox with John Prine in Atlanta. I figure next time around, he headlines the Fox.

I feel the same way Cant remember a recent record I have enjoyed as much as Southeastern
If you can find the Austin City Limits episode with him on it, he plays a lot of the tracksits great.
On the F BombI dont knowI have mixed emotions on thatbecause, like he normally does, he manages to convey a thought or an emotion with crystal clarity with just a few words I dont know what other word(s) would have worked in that context given the story the song conveys. I will say thisIf my kids are in the car, I reach for the volume knob at that part! I think hes one of the most talented writers out there today.

Southeastern is brilliant........period. I interviewed Jason a couple of years before this album....right before he went sober.....and sometimes that is the right move.........but give some credit to his wife and musician in her own right Amanda Shires who has made a difference........fortunately, for the last almost two years, I have lived in the western North Carolina High Country Mountains and that means that I get to listen to the GREAT listener supported radio station WNCW on about three different locations on the FM dial...and earlier this year Jason and Amanda stopped in for a wonderful in-studio duo performance...stripped down...which you can watch here...

Thanks! I've been listening to WNCW since I got back from band practice at about 8:00. Awesome channel! The honky tonk show till 11:00 was great. This rock show is good too. I'm in Philly and listen to WXPN a lot, but this will definitely takes it's place for the time being.

Isbell won big at the Americana Awards & Honors this week, taking Artist, Album and Song of the Year (he won song of the year a couple of years ago for "Alabama Pines"). Glad to see it!

Because of this thread, I bought Southeastern and have listened to it about 6000 times. Possibly the best music purchase of the year for me. It's brilliant and beautiful.

Thanks for the recommendation. One of the many, many reasons I love this place.

New Live DVD coming out. IMO, the Southeastern songs were even stronger live with the 400 Unit. His Austin City Limits episode only showed part of his recording. This DVD is the whole thing: 8 songs from Southeastern plus 3 tunes from Here We Rest, 3 from his Drive By Truckers days and a great cover of the Stones' Can't You Hear Me Knockin:

I've got it ordered!

Also based on this thread, I bought it a few months ago. It took me a while to warm up to it, but I like it. And Tim is right, Jason is fantastic live as I saw him last month. I had seen him 2-3 yrs ago and it was only ok. Sobriety really suits him!

Go Hastings has the vinyl for $16 that includes a download card and it is a nice 180 gm record.

I just picked it up through a question I asked Devon Allman on Twitter. I wondered what he, Devon, listened to that was Acoustic and earthy and he suggested Isbell's album.

It did not disappoint and I've been listening to it for about a week straight. He has some very interesting guitar stuff going on and his melodies are very interesting.

Jason Isbell is awesome! I loved some of his stuff with the Drive By Truckers and his song Sunstroke (Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit) had me totally hooked. Southeastern is a gem. Excited to see him live in February.

I have been on board with Jason since the Truckers , great songwriter , he's a really good slide player also , allthough I think he should play it more often. Great live show , seen him a few times
Southeastern is one of his best lp's so far , pretty cool Devon knows whats up
