Cover

Doesn't look like much tape but it is all there.

Ready for action.

Like most prerecorded reel to reel releases from the day it has none of the LP inner jacket pic or back cover art. Simply lists songs on back with time. I think since reel to reel were such a small market limited run release they saved money and went basic on the packaging. This tape must have been stored well, plays flawlessly.

Nice. Back in the day I had a Sony. Recorded both ABB Winterland 9-73 (KSAN) and DB & GS / Roxy 5-77 (KMET) broadcasts and swore by the quality. Haven't been able to find those masters for decades...

That's cool as hell Tony.

Do you have many reel to reel tapes?

Lee, I don't. (I assume you mean prerecorded). I have Band of Gypsies Hendrix also is all. They appear on ebay. Lots of Glen Cambell, Associatian, etc.... But for classic rock it is hit and miss. Most of the artists we would like here are $40-50 and often you don't know tape condition, many sellers don't have decks to test! Upper tier releases (Stones, Beatles, etc) can hit $100 so out of my league on those. I do use deck to record favorite cuts off vinyl, do personal favorites tapes (like the old days). Tidbit: They don't make tape new except very expensive European ($60 one reel 7 inch) so one must gamble on buying 40+ year old used. If stored out of heat and humidity it will be fine. Often they wind up in basements, attics, and garages, all bad news! They other sticky wicket is decks. One must almost always have to rebuild them, they atrophy terribly and the old lube was never meant to last 40 years. They are 80% mechanical and 20% electronic.

Very nice, thanks for sharing. I only have my original vinyl, bought by the 21 year-old me, in 1979.

Excuse my ignorance, but I did not realise you could buy pre-recorded reel-to-reel tapes ... how does the sound compare to vinyl Tony?

Harvey, it's like anything, it can vary. I have only had three in my life, 2 now and one 40 plus years ago. It was Harrison 'All Things Must Pass". This ABB one is a bit not as good on sonic quality, the EQ is low on the bass end you have to compensate on playing. The Hendrix one I have is A+++ sound. The difference may be the following: Prerecorded reel to reel came in two flavors of tape speeds. 3 3/4 inch per sec. and 7 1/2 IPS also. The faster 7 1/2 is the premium sound format. So the Hendrix is that and is awesome. This ABB is the slower 3 3/4 IPS. This ABB I just noticed is a "Columbia House" manufactured one (interesting in itself, never knew they had R to R production offerings). That may be part of the issue on this one, not the best grade. But reel to reel, when done properly, should be exactly the sonic quality of brand new vinyl without any of the static, or problem noise used vinyl can have. So it is pure analog.
