Very cool retro guitars with a very unique voice

I love the sound of the long horn bass...I know a few bassist that use them......nice plonk they have

Not to mention that you can flip them over and cut some salami for an after gig snack...I do believe they are Formica

A friend of mine has a 1955 Danelectro StratoTone. Has a pretty chunky comfortable neck and is a great inexpensive guitar. I think it's a 25 1/2 in. scale. I don't know what the price tag would be on it today however.

Out of curiosity, about five years ago I bought a Dan 63 from Music123.com. Played it for a couple of
years and sold it on Ebay. Wide flat neck, "off toned"...To me, more form than function. I remember Mr. Dave used to play them and swore by them....

They have amazing acoustic properties, but like any string instrument, if its not properly set up, it won't play worth a sh!t.

I got a Danelectro baritone '63 model a few years back. I love it for its unique sound but just don't find I gravitate too often for recording with it. Came in handy for a Wichita Lineman cover I did a while back, though.

I would say most have intonation issues as they are not top of the line instruments. But they have a sound that no other guitar has....the combination of the lipstick pickup and Formica just have a unique voice....If you want an early 60's guitar sound its got it

They used to be made of masonite, which was also used as a shingle for houses. it contained asbestos, so they stopped production of it. now they use a similar composite material. it has a pine frame which is chambered and they sandwich the frame with 2 pieces of the composite particle board.

I have a re-issue of the single pick-up, single cutaway in red. I love the sound, but it can be hard to play.

I do love the fact that it weighs next to nothing, and is easy on my back!

Take it to a trusted luthier/tech and have it professionally set up.

a beautiful guitar but i found it hard to keep it in tune---a sensitive sort of instrument.

POPS-any tuning difficulties on the bass?
