I was at the peach yesterday for the Dickey set and I have to say, because of the youtube footage from Macon and even the Beacon last week, I was going into this set with low expectations and hoping for the best for Dickey. He really rose to the challenge. There is no doubt this was the largest crowd he will play to, barring maybe Wanee next year or a repeat at the Peach next year if he is still touring and he really stepped up his game.

I was so happy for him and the crowd ate it up. The improvement was very noticeable and there were flashes here and there of the guitar god that we all know he is. I left the set feeling so happy and honestly relieved. It was a beautiful moment.

On side note, the peach festival gets better and better every year. I hope they keep doing it.

What time was Dickey's set?

Also, where is a good video feed of the show?

It's nuts how much momentum Peach has gained, it has definitely eclipsed Wanee in the lineup department over the past 3 years.

I think the fact that it is based in the Northeast really helps. You get the "hey we are in the middle of nowhere on a mountain" vibe, while also being 2 hours from NYC, Philly, and 4 hours from Boston. It has become the Northeast hub for this scene in the summer time. I couldn't be more pleased with how it has progressed over the years.

Dickey was scheduled for 6 I think but he came on a little late. Techs were taking forever getting everything set up.

Could be, the Allmans always draw a strong crowd in the NE obviously. Having lived in both the NE and Florida, I think it has more to do with timing. Mountain Jam used to be the "hey were are on a mountain" fest, but that's gone pretty corporate/mainstream. Wanee used to draw a really solid lineup in the Spring, but since the Allmans disbanded, it has had to compete more with 420 in Atlanta and gotten mostly Dead Head scraps the past 2 years. The Allman family bands have quickly made Peach their stop if they have to pick one, which is great for the fest. Wanee is still a lot of fun, but the Allman scene has quickly pivoted to Peach.

That's great to hear. Looking at some of the YouTube videos from the St. George show, he seemed to be gaining momentum.

Keep in mind that he hasn't played live since 2014 and it didn't look like he was coming back from retirement. A lot of rust to shake off if you ask me. While he is 74 years old and there's a lot of hard miles on him, keep in mind that he's only a couple of days younger or older than Keith Richards and that guy just keeps on ticking.

Again, great to hear that he's playing better.

Also, any guests sit in on his set?

Devon Allman for Midnight Rider, that’s it.

Bummer. I was hoping to hear Warren Haynes at the very least sitting in for a song or two.

Have Dickey & Warren played together since the fax? I don't think so.. have they played together since Warren split off to do the Mule full time?

I know Duane Betts has sat in with the Mule a few times.

Yes, Dickey and Warren played together several times when Dickey guested with Phil Lesh and Friends during the Q era. First time is here:

Dickey also guested with the Q 3 different times in July of 2002. All are on Archive.org.

Thanks so much for linking this! Very cool

And how cosmic that you had the original plus the 2 subsequent players in the "Dickey spot" of the ABB all on 1 stage trading licks --- far out!

I wrote on here not too long ago that "Dickey can't play." I was front and center at Peach, and I'm happy to say that I was 100% wrong. Of course he's not the same Dickey we all know and love, but he played very well and held his own with anyone up there. His notes were crisp, in tune, perfect timing, and at a decent speed. I even heard several of his signature licks. The bottom line is that I closed my eyes during much of it, and I truly felt like it was the late 90's all over again. Hearing Dickey's familiar sounds was such an incredible gift. That unmistakable guitar and voice were in full force in Scranton, and all I can do is say thank you to the legend that is Dickey. Thank you Dickey!

Very encouraged by the videos from this show.
I hope they keep the momentum going.
Allmans family music is the soundtrack to my life.

I was thinking (hoping) some combination of Dickey, Warren, Jaimoe or Oteil would play together on a song, but great to read that Dickey was good form!

I have seen video from each and every show they have played so far and up until the Peach every show was a complete train wreck. He looked and played 1000 times better at the Peach both on guitar and vocally. Maybe this was a sober show? I hate to even broach that topic but the disparity in how bad all the other shows were and how much better that one was is rather large. Should be interesting to see if future shows are more like the bad ones or the good one. I hope they are like the Peach show.

I should point out that I have yet to see a video that does the mix and sound quality any justice at all. Being under the tent, each instrument was loud and clear, and the rhythm section was felt. It was way better live.

If you “hate to broach that topic” then don’t!
The other shows weren’t “bad” to hundreds of fans that were actually in attendance so it is offensive for someone who has only watched videos to make negative insinuations.
I was as close as an audience member could be for 3 shows and Dickey entertained us quite well. Absolutely nothing suggested that he wasn’ t clear -even on a sweltering Long Islamd stage.’ He gave us all a nice gift that came from a genuine place!

Unless something has changed, Dickey drinks beer everyday and has since he was a young man. And back in the day so did Gregg, Duane, Butch and Berry.

Duane Betts posted on his Facebook page the Peach was by far the best show his dad's band played so far this year and he looks forward to the August shows. And Duane Betts and Devon Allman are light years ahead of where they were when they would sit in with the band. They are turning into really strong players. Both are regularly playing strong lead guitar now.

Indeed it's difficult to get a good read on those audience recordings. The sound quality is just not good. I'm sure all those shows including the Macon show sounded better live. With that said, it seems the band was doing fine but Dickey struggled. It sounds as if his timing was off more than one would expect on his level and Duane Betts had to help lead him through songs and help him find his place. And it seemed several solos had some clinker notes that were stand out bad. I felt embarrassed for Dickey as I'm sure he could hear those clams and they seemed to be very bad notes if these audience tapes are close to accurate. Train wrecks? Probably. I was afraid his age and so many years of booze, pot and blow meant it wouldn't change. But apparently Dickey finally shook it off and it was mostly just from 4 years of little play and even when he played it was in his living room and thinking his career was over.

But though the audience tapes of the Peach are still difficult to tell how tight and slick the band actually was, Dickey indeed did seem to play with more conviction and focus and while it didn't have the energy and magic he could still bring even in 1999 when Derek joined, I don't hear any clams. The notes sound right and you can clearly hear some of the Betts tone and style/magic that sets Dickey apart from every other guitar player. All the really great guitar players have their own tone and style and it's hard to notice their influnces. And Dickey Betts ISb one of the all time greats. If you consider his song writing gems with his tone and his own unique style and the magic he weaves when he is really locked in, Dickey is probably the best guitarist ever to be a member of the Allman Brothers. And that is saying a lot because Duane Allman, Jack, Warren, Derek are among the best I've ever seen. But personally I put Dickey on top because the others so far haven't added a Blue Sky, Jessica, Liz Reed, etc to their resume. For ABB fans Dickey is a treasure.

So.... are you with Dickey everyday or perhaps have a video of him telling everyone he drinks beer everyday?
