The U.S.P.S. is not delivering mail in Chicago for two days, yesterday and today. Interesting timing since today in January 31st. Companies are required by law to have your tax form(s) delivered by January 31st. MANY companies wait until the last possible second to deliver people their W-2 or 1099 tax form, which is today. I have no clue why they do this because it doesn't affect the firm AT ALL to send them earlier. The only person affected is the person waiting so they can do their taxes.

This year I am one of the folks waiting. It's not the end of the world but still, I think it's childish for firms to do this.

But I wonder about this: I thought Social Security checks were delivered at the end of the month as well. That would be more important if seniors need their checks. I could be wrong about that though. Someone could correct me on that if I'm wrong.

It was more than Chicago, it is happening in SEVEN states.

"The USPS announced that no mail will be delivered in parts of Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Some retail offices of the postal service will be open, but couriers won't be delivering any mail to those areas."

It's not the first time that mail carriers won't deliver mail to certain addresses due to bad weather, but typically, those scenarios happen on a street or two that is blocked off by snow drifts. In Wednesday's case, it is the forecast for extreme cold, which is hitting the Midwest particularly hard.

But even with the lack of mail delivery Wednesday, there's no real breach of a postal service motto. While many people believe that "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" is an official motto for the postal service, it is not.

According to the USPS, "While the Postal Service has no official motto, the popular belief that it does is a tribute to America's postal workers. The words above, thought to be the motto, are chiseled in gray granite over the entrance to the New York City Post Office on 8th Avenue."

The words, according to the USPS, "come from Book 8, Paragraph 98, of The Persian Wars by Herodotus. During the wars between the Greeks and Persians (500-449 B.C.), the Persians operated a system of mounted postal couriers who served with great fidelity."

While the postal service does not have an official motto, it does have an official mission statement:

The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities.

There's no word yet on when mail service will resume in the affected regions.

They also didn't pick up garbage for 2 days..... no big deal, most of my actual mail ends up in the garbage anyway .......

Since I have investments at Charles Schwab, I never do my taxes early - they never send the tax forms until mid-February, and you can bet there is at least one revision after that...... I think most investment places are like that.....

I can't speak about other companies, but it is a real hassle for me to even get my 1099s out by the end of January. As a small company, I have to figure out who needs them and how much I paid them. Well, I worked 14 hour days away from the office most of the month, including Saturdays, so the last thing I wanted to do after working 14 hour days in the field is to sit down and stare at spreadsheets for another 4 hours to figure out 1099s. I don't think most people are holding them back on purpose, but they take time.

I'm an accountant and while I understand the hassle for a small company, I kind of don't get it. Companies have a month to figure out what they paid the prior year to someone. Seems reasonable to me. It's not like going through an audit, which takes literally months. Those suck. And I respectfully disagree that companies don't do it on purpose. I don't understand why, but some (not all) do. I really don't understand why large companies can't do it sooner. They have nothing to gain by waiting and they have the resources to do it.

Sucks about your situation though. When I've had to do it, my most difficult part of that was determining who I should 1099. You have to differentiate between contractors (they get one) and vendors (they don't). There's a lot of subjectivity. And God forbid you 1099 someone you weren't supposed to. I always erred on the side of caution. I'm pretty sure I saved some people some tax dollars at the expense of the government.

Wait, I thought this thread was about the mail.

I have to talk to JP Morgan today. That is one of my questions.
