Democrats are pushing legislation that would put Washington in charge of the Internet. Here’s what that means for you:

A panel of five unelected bureaucrats would be in charge of setting prices, sanctioning new investments, and dictating how all Americans use the Internet. The Federal Communications Commission—not the free market—would have unprecedented power to control the Internet. This sort of centralized control and overregulation would stifle innovation, limit consumer choice, and ultimately put the United States at a global disadvantage.

Rural communities—which already have higher costs and fewer options—would suffer most. Many rural areas are served by smaller Internet Service Providers, who just simply cannot bear the costs of burdensome regulations like the big boys could. So they would be forced to pass along the added expense to consumers, resulting in higher prices for worse service.

Those taxes and fees that are nearly impossible to understand on your phone and cable bills? Those would go up. Democrats want to recategorize the Internet under current law so that your home internet and phone data plan could both be taxed, just like your cable bill.

What Democrats are jamming through Congress doesn’t stop the bias. And it doesn’t protect your data or your privacy.

Republicans have a better plan:

We’re going to keep the Internet tax-free. Permanently.
We encourage competition so that broadband gets to rural communities.
We’re going to crack down on companies that block sites or throttle speeds.

The Internet doesn’t need saving BY Washington. It needs saving FROM Washington.

Remarks: I already heard that cable effs with the speed of the internet they provide in an effort to get you to think you have to switch to premium services to get that faster speed, if Washington gets involved in regulating the internet, well then we may have to march on Washington to make that stop. The problem is IF they get it legislated it is more work to get it repealed.

Doesn't matter - it's all the same either way whether it costs or not, we are all prisoners in our matrix pods. They are just trying to keep the illusion going that the internet is desirable so we don't rebel and abandon our collective hypno-brainwash Cyberian Gulag.

This is actually a bunch of lies. The Democrats are trying to once again to reinstate net neutrality, which is exactly the opposite of what the Republicans did. If by regulate you mean to keep access to all websites equal instead of the government or your Internet service provider getting to decide what websites you can visit and at what speed, then I guess your idea of more government control is different than mine.

I think this is good!

If controlling what goes on around the internet is not THE most important role of government, its easily in the top two or three at least.

Funny, but true. They're both comically derailed.

The question is "How far off the track is your vote willing to take you"?

I'll write in Bob Weir so I can ride my high horse and blame it all on the poor suckers who voted Democrat or Republican.

Because the WP is an outlet for views you won't express in public; anger can't be controlled.

No, it’s an outlet for YOU because you can’t express your bigotry in public because of the shame and rejection you’d receive. It’s pretty easy for me to call Trump a dirty scum bag in public. Racists don’t have this freedom, and it REALLY bugs them.

Don't know what you mean by "public", the WP is pretty much public.
The thoughts and views I share with friends and family and vice versa are way stronger than any of the stuff going down here. This is nothing.

You think net neutrality is “controlling what goes on around the Internet”? Do you understand the issue at hand? It’s not about controlling the Internet at all.

What do you mean by this? Kevin McCarthy is a Representative in Congress, but not JUST a member.

"Kevin McCarthy is the Republican Leader of the United States House of Representatives. He is dedicated to preserving and promoting the American Dream for all hardworking Americans. evin McCarthy proudly serves as Representative for California’s 23rd Congressional District and as the Republican Leader of the United States House of Representatives."

He tweets too.

Follow House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy on Twitter @GOPLeader

And I don't think you would be referring to all of us here on the Whippin' Post as being on a 'bogus website', so I do not know what you are referring to.

"controlling what goes on around the internet?" are you suggesting censorship in the land of the free?

The URL itself reveals a deranged bias that Democrats want to take over the Internet, which obviously isn’t true. Since the representative chose to be subjective rather than objective, he reduced it to a bogus page.

Why don't you talk about that GINA?

Try a little truth instead of phony links and BS.

Well, that's your fault for not being rich enough. Maybe if you worked harder or were born with a silver spoon in your mouth you could be rich and enjoying that tax cut. Stop blaming Trump for your not being in the top 1%!!!

The consistent number you will find pertaining to the "Top" 1% is roughly $422,000 annually.

Hope you're not a fan of Professional Sports!...Guess what?.....They all make that and more. Funny thing is that most who think the 1% suck, sit down in front of a TV, Watch the NBA, NFL, MLB and worship at the alter of $$$

Who said the 1% sucks? 2112 was criticizing Trump’s policy, not the people earning the money. That should’ve been obvious.

Good Point. I do NOT under any circumstances, talk politics in public or private person to person scenarios, someone is going to take it to the argument level which is a lose, lose situation. No one is going to change anyone's mind, if you believe you will?. Experience will show you otherwise. Friends, family, restaurants, etc. I will excuse myself and walk away, not worth it. This forum is cool because I can state an opinion, then decide if interaction it what I desire. People's opinions or actions here matter not to me. While I appreciate the opportunity at the exchange of ideas, it upsets me not in the least if others choose to express their opinion about all things on a non personal level.

That someone is you. I have friendly debates about politics ALL THE TIME with my conservative friends. Why can’t you? Because you don’t know how to express yourself without insulting others. That’s not about politics at all. That’s just you.

Well this is a dumb thing to say, just another way to randomly discredit athletes. Also, it's wrong.

When people refer to the 1%, they mean the 1% of the 1%. The very top millionaires making $10 Million+ annually, not just people making healthy 6-figures.

In the four major professional sports leagues, there are only about 4000 professional athletes total, and yes, they all make a minimum of 6 figures for a full season. But not everyone is LeBron, the vast majority of them only play a few seasons and then move on to other less-lucrative careers. But that's still a tiny fraction of the number of people (bankers, real estate developers, doctors, lawyers) who are consistently making money and affecting policy. And that is what "the 1%" refers to.
