If you have tickets to the Beacon.......you lucky bas***ds!!!!!!!!

Allman Brothers head back to New York‘s Beacon
13 January, 2006

By Ray Waddell

NASHVILLE (Billboard) - Like the mushrooms of spring, the Allman Brothers Band has popped up in New York each March for a sold-out run of dates at the 2,894-capacity Beacon Theater.

The Allmans‘ Beacon gigs have evolved into one of the more truly special artist/venue relationships in the business. The shows hark back to the band‘s legendary concerts at New York‘s late, great Fillmore East.

"We think it‘s really special," band manager Bert Holman says of the Beacon shows. "It‘s the closest we could come to capturing the Fillmore magic, since the Fillmore isn‘t here."

This year, the group will perform 13 shows March 9-25. All are expected to sell out for a total capacity of nearly 38,000.
The band began playing the Beacon in 1989 when the members reunited on the Dreams tour. They recorded a live record at the venue in 1999, Holman says.

"We were contractually obligated to do a live record at some point for Sony, and we had played four nights in Macon (Ga.), but didn‘t feel like we got a good enough recording," he recalls.

The Beacon was booked as part of a brief run of theaters, and ended up selling out 10 shows, to everyone‘s surprise. "That‘s when we really knew we were on to something," Holman says.

In 1995, Radio City Music Hall "enticed" the band to play there, Holman says. "In 1996 (the Beacon) made us an offer we couldn‘t refuse, and we haven‘t left," he adds. "Ultimately, we listened to our audience, and they told us they liked the vibe in the Beacon."

So how do they gauge how many dates to book? "It‘s a Zen thing," Holman says. "One year I think we did 17 shows, we were there like a month, and Gregg (Allman) says, ‘That‘s starting to feel like work.‘ Then we decided to cut back and create more demand. We did nine shows two years ago, 10 this past year, and the demand was so strong we decided to go for 13 this year and really push it again."

In addition to vocalist/keyboardist Allman, the band‘s lineup is Butch Trucks (drums and tympani), Jaimoe (drums), Warren Haynes (vocals, lead/slide guitar), Derek Trucks (slide/lead guitar), Oteil Burbridge (bass) and Marc Quinones (congas and percussion).

Holman says the band will play about 30 dates in 2006 beyond the Beacon stand.

Yes, going to the Beacon for two shows. Can't wait. I'm glad to hear we have more shows for this year on the horizon.

I hope one of them is Red Rocks. Love that place.

I know a lot of people's initial reaction of course will be "Only 30 dates?"...but remember, there were quite a few here that were worried that there wasn't going to be ANY dates at all this summer considering other projects of some band members, scheduling conflicts, the ages of Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe etc. I think that's a good sign and I think there is a good chance there willl be even more than the 30 dates that Bert mentioned. It always turns out to be more in the end. WE got a bit spoiled last year by the fact they did a lot more dates than originally were planned - almost 70 shows I think. I'm quite sure this will stir some emotions...any announcement at all always does around here. All I know is, 13 dates at The Beacon is a hell of a way to start the year!

Doing the math you got 13 Beacon shows, plus 2 shows at Wanee, and then the 30 dates this summer, that's already 45 shows. I think when it's all said and done the ABB will end up doing 50+ shows this year.

That is great news but never really doubted that they would tour. This band is hot right now and time is not on their side.Same belief that Derek will play with them all Summer. One has to belief he has a sense of how special this band is right now and knows its limited amount of time to keep it rolling.

I know Reuters (and the AP) tend to get the details wrong more often than right, but I thought the Peakin' at the Beacon release in '99 was to fulfill the contractual obligation to Sony. But weren't the four nights in Macon from December 1991, and those were the shows they recorded but didn't get a good enough recording so they used recordings from the Beacon instead for the "An Evening With ... First Set" live album release?

Just seems like they're combining the stories of the 1991 and 1999 live Beacon releases. Either I'm confused or Reuters is confused, or more likely both.

For real. I remember 3 theatre shows in recent years, or at least two. Now that we're down to one a year, please don't take that away from us.

Their show in '94 at GW which followed the Woodstock II gig -- transcendent. That lineup was on fire -- MANY killer shows from 1994-96.
The ABB seems to love Great Woods/Tweeter Ctr. -- the fans certainly love them -- although that's the case pretty much wherever they play.
Even the 1999 lineup with Derek & Dickey, which sometimes gets overlooked -- I only have a partial tape from that show from Great Woods, but the Liz Reed & JJ's Alley smoke.
Us fans who call the ABB their favorite of all have it REAL lucky!! The Allmans are the best damn band in the land, & have been for decades.
Thank you Allman Brothers, I love ya.

I would even drive down to give you a hand.

Other than that, keeping it within a day's drive works for me.

I wouldn't be surprised if they play at Bonnaroo. Mule has been there the last few years, and the Bros. 2 years ago. Either way, my uneducated guess is that they won't play Starwood. I guess we could hope for the Ryman, but...eh, doubt it.

Hey Ron, you love Zakk? Wondering if you have or know of a copy floating around out there from when Zakk played "the Woods" with the Brothers?
