Alfred Souza said..

"For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin.

At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have. Treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time...and remember that time waits for no one...

So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday night, until Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on, until you've had a drink, until you've sobered up, until you die, until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy..."

"There is a persuasion in the soul of man that he is here for cause, that he was put down in this place by the Creator to do the work for which He inspires him, that thus he is an overmatch for all antagonists that could combine against him." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Very cool Allen!

One of my all-time favorite Mark Twain quotes that you didn't list is:
"The coldest winter I ever spent, was a summer in San Francisco"

And of course the Golden Rule:
"Treat others the way you want to be treated"

Something I heard my dad say all the time:
"Everybody like a little a$$, but no one likes a smart a$$" (I never absorbed that one )

You don't work, the man don't pay ya.

To me, boxing is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography and the dancers hit each other.

I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

During the Middle Ages, probably one of the biggest mistakes was not putting on your armor because you were "just going down to the corner."

If you get invited to your first orgy, don't just show up nude. That's a common mistake. You have to let nudity "happen."

“The atomic cataclysm has occurred. The earth is silent, covered by a gray pall. All life has been extinguished save in one deep leaden slit, where, long inured to radiation, persists a small colony of algae. They perceive that all life save theirs has been extinguished and that the entire task of evolution must begin again – some billions of years of life and death, mutation and adaptation, cooperation and competition, all to recover yesterday. They come to an immediate, spontaneous and unanimous conclusion: “Next time, no brains.””

"So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas.

A looper, you know, a caddy; a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald — striking.

So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one — big hitter, the Lama — long, into a 10,000 foot crevice, right at the base of this glacier.

And do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... Gunga, gunga galunga.

So we finish the 18th and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know?"

And he says, 'Oh, there won't be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.'

So I got that goin' for me. Which is nice."

Andy Dufresne: That's the beauty of music. They can't get that from you... Haven't you ever felt that way about music?
Red: I played a mean harmonica as a younger man. Lost interest in it though. Didn't make much sense in here
Andy Dufresne: Here's where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don't forget.
Red: Forget?
Andy Dufresne: Forget that... there are places in this world that aren't made out of stone, and that there's something inside that they can't get to, and that they can't touch. It's yours.
Red: What're you talking about?
Andy Dufresne: Hope.

"I love being alive and will be the best man I possibly can be. I will take love wherever I find it and offer it to everyone who will take it. I will seek knowledge from those wiser than me and teach those who wish to learn from me."
~Duane Allman

Frodo: It is a pity that Bilbo didn't kill [Gollum] when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed his sword. Many who live deserve death, and some who are dead deserve to be living. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends.

Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had ever happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

~Both of those are from the Fellowship of the Ring movie.

Terence Mann:
Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.
