I am watching Open Range for maybe the second time, and I am really into the plot. I love old westerns. Of all the movie genres out there, the western is my favorite, with comedies a close second.

If I was sick and dying, and they had a "Make a Wish Foundation" for adults, my dying wish would be to star in a western with Robert Duvall. I don't think there's a much better actor out there right now.

Anybody got a favorite western? (I know we've probably discussed this before.)

+1

OJW and Dances With Wolves are my two favorites. Next would be Lonesome Dove and Open Range.

Gotta go with High Plains Drifter and the man with no name trilogy. I also really dug the lonesome dove miniseries. Probably the best tv movie ever made IMO.

I like darker stories of the west. I haven't gotten into Dead Wood but people tell me it's great. Ever since I read Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian , I never thought of the old west in terms of John Wayne and Zane Gray again. I highly reccomend this book if you like western literature.

I'm with BDOB about Robert Duvall. Just about any western with him in it is ok by me. My hubby and I are also John Wayne fans, so you know a lot of westerns are watched in our house. I think "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" are my top 2 favorites!

My two favorites are "Sons Of Katie Elder" and "Magnificent Seven". (this is as hard as picking favorite guitarists, with the exception of Duane and Jimi )

Sam Peckinpah's PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID (1973)

It stars James Coburn as Garrett and Kris Kristofferson as Billy. Also with Bob Dylan as Alias. Richard Bright, who plays one of Billy's men was in the headlines recently because he died after getting run over by a car in New York City.

I have a Thanksgiving tradition of watching this movie (thanks to a scene where Billy & Alias go turkey hunting). This was recently released on DVD in two cuts, the director's cut and a more recent version mixing old footage with some previously unseen.

One of my favorite scenes is where Pat Garrett is tormenting Billy's gang in a bar and makes Alias read the wall of cans "Beans.....beans.....tomatoes.....beans....." Alias somehow finds a pair of glasses to help him read!

Apparently this movie had a troubled production, mostly due to Peckinpah's perfectionism and out of control alcohol abuse. Legend has it he got so angry after a shot, he took the film and urinated on it!! When it was released in 1973 he was forced to edit the movie and the version in the theatres left something to be desired. Finally the new DVD contains Peckinpah's true vision, and it is a classic.
