Need some help! Can anyone offer up some questions they would ask a jazz guitar master if given the chance. I know I am going to be over my head in this class. But Frank has promised that each of the participants will be given a jam with him.

Updated 4/28/07: Today I get a two hour lesson with Frank Vignola. Then tonight one of his latest incarnations of musicians MaMaVig play in front of me & sixty four others. MaMaVig consists of Frank, Jamie Masefield of Jazz Mandolin Project & Gary Mazzaropi of the Les Paul Orchestra on upright.

MaMaVig is touring, tix are very reasonable, & if you have the chance to see them you will most certainly be amazed!

There are a ton of new videos on MaMaVig's myspace of some incredible picking. I know I know. I can't shut up about them! I would love to know what y'all think of these cats!

Dickey has said many times over that Django Reinhardt is a strong influence on his playing. In this clip Frank Vignola, a gypsy jazz virtuoso, & his protege Vinnie Raniolo, tear out a new original that could be a Dickey tune if you ask me. But then again, like I said, I would like your opinion.

Django made the most of what he had. On his fretting hand the index and middle fingers seemed to be fine and did just about all of it. The ring and pinky weren't usable for much. He was burned badly at age 18 and was already a guitarist before it happened.

Italian . . . Polish . . . aah, we're all trying to get to the same place in the end right?

John, if you know the head for Tico Tico I have the rhythm sealed up air tight brutha!

And yes it will be a MUST jam at Wanee. If you care to brush up for a little jamming when we're down there I've been ball$ deep in So What, Take Five & Liz Reed. The other guitarist in my trio has all kinds of new harmonies worked out for Liz Reed where there weren't any before.

I get to sit through a clinic with Frank on April 28th, then watch him rip it up with MaMaVig- him, Jamie Masefield (Jazz Mandolin Project), & Gary Mazzaropo (Les Paul's bassist for forever) along with 65 other people. Sorry don't mean to gloat but they have really taken my playing & listening to a new level.

Great stuff, Brian! This weekend at Suwannee Springfest, during some very heated bluegrass jamming, some of the guys broke off into some gypsy-style playing.

I'm really in a quandry about bringing my guitars down to Wanee. I may only have room for one if I am lucky. And it may be the Taylor as it is better suited for sitting around a fire & playing. The Les Paul would take up less room in the car. I just don't know.

If you care to see some incredible GUITAR playing- watch Frank's solo at the end of this clip (BTW the whole clip is incredible!) But his strumming hand is moving so fast that the camera can't even catch it!

Thanks again, Brian...bada$$ right hand! Have seen Frank's name pop up on the net several times this week about him joining the David Grisman Quartet. Also saw mention that Frank was going to be working with Josh Pinkham, who is a mandolin phenom from Florida. He is a regular at Spirit of Suwannee; saw him last weekend & he continues to blow my mind everytime I see him.

MaMaVig consists of Frank, Jamie Masefield of Jazz Mandolin Project & Gary Mazzaropi of the Les Paul Orchestra on upright. Rumor has it that Casey Driessen of Union Station, who is in Frank Vignola's Gypsy Grass Collective, may be there, Mike Auldridge, master lap dobro player, will most certainl be in attendance. And most questionnably but very likely- David Grisman! Frank has recently announced that he has officially become a member of the Grisman Quintet. And while it hasn't been confirmed it has been discussed about gris being there tonight.

Brian, Barry Zion shined some light on me about reducing file size if needed...if I can do it, anybody can !

What an incredible opportunity to learn form those guys in such a small, intimate setting. Very cool! Gary Mazzaroppi (sp?) is also a killer player! I have a Tal Farlow cd that he plays on that is just incredible. You're very lucky, Brian.

I have trouble with this, I'm sure there's an easy way - but so far .. it's been elusive. I use an iriver conversion program to get my vids below the 100 mgs limit.... trouble is .... it's not great on the sinc. The funny thing is, i use sony vegas for editing and there must be a way of setting the rendering options to one of less than 100mgs.

And no, I never thought of reading the manual .... Cause i use the force
