I am glad you got struck by the Col. I got struck about a year ago. The Codetalkers Now is pretty good. You can go to btree and download some torrents with the Col. Codetalkers, ARU etc..............

Go to Amazon.com and pick up used copies of the first two ARU records. The debut is live and self-titled, the follow-up is "Mirrors of Embarrassment" and is a studio effort. Both are out of print, so you have to go the used route.

Then go to HittintheNote.com and get "Arkansas." This was Bruce's masterpiece from 1986. There are a few "1980's" production sound, but it's one of the best studio records out there. I put it up there with the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" recording. The Terminus Records reissue also has a couple bonus tracks by ARU, although they don't cite the band by name.

There's also a good compilation on Landside Records called "Strange Voices." This covers Bruce's recording period between (after) Hampton Grease Band and before ARU.

The live Fiji Mariners record is also really good, but also out of print. You can look for used copies though.

Finally, a lot of folks will say to get Hampton Grease Band's legendary "Music to Eat." I agree that it's a must-have, but it's one of the hardest of Bruce's records to listen to. My view is to start with his more "listenable" records first and then get this one. But do get it. It was out of print for 25 years, then reissued in the mid-90's on CD and then I believe it went out of print again. But you should be able to find a used copy at Amazon or ebay.

Hope that helps! And others will have opinions that likely differ from mine and come from people whose opinions I respect, so just take my suggestions with a grain of salt if it differs too much from Hophead's or HoraceGammet's or RobJohnson's, etc.

There's some cool footage of him in the Widespread Panic video The Earth Will Swallow You.

Is he in the movie sling blade ? I think he's in that band that Dwight Yokahm plays with in that one scene in the front yard and then he recites a crazy poem at some point. It's been a long time since I've been told that and even longer since I've seen the flick , can anyone confirm ?

One thing to note is that Otiel , Jimmy Herring and Jeff Sipe are on that first live album. I have it and probably haven't spun it since the 90's . Looks like it's time for a break out.

Oteil, Jimmy and Sipe (and Matt Mundy) are also on the second ARU album, "Mirrors of Embarrassment." They're also on one of the two ARU bonus tracks on "Arkansas." The other ARU bonus track is the lineup with Mosier and Charlie Williams (no Mundy and no Jimmy), and is also good. Sipe (and Yonrico Scott and Sonny Emory) also drummed on the actual "Arkansas" album, but the credits aren't on a per-song basis, so it's hard (for my ears) to tell who drummed on which songs.

I'm still looking for a copy of the first ARU "live" CD, but I will concur with the Zambi-Mirrors of Embarassment is incredible! Just freakin' awesome. Southern Fried Frank Zappa, but better! Also it should be noted that there is some of ARU's reunion set from 2000 Warren's X-mas Jam. While it's probably more important for historical purposes than for the performance. Hey Drew howya' doin'.

Is this the one you mean:

Not cheap, but worth every penny. There are also some great ARU shows available on the Archive for download.

You should be able to get all of 'em for under $15 used, if you're patient. Here's the first ARU record on CD starting under $11:
