Derek probably used the Idol more for Washburn promo shots than he did as a stage guitar. His main Washburn was a custom made one called the E300. It wasn't available for retail sale.

I also forgot a couple of things. The D'Angelico NYSL-9 that Susan plays used to be Derek's. Also there is a picture somewhere on this site of him playing a Gibson CS-356 at an ABB show. His old main SG looked to be a standard as opposed to the reissues he has now. It had the full pickguard and the SG trussrod cover. Also can't forget Bukka White's National. Oh and in a recent picture I noticed him playing a Silvertone. One of those with the huge goofy headstocks like the ones that Beck (not Jeff) uses.

Just a little extra bit. When I was talking to him last summer after the free noon show, the one that the LP was used, he said the sunburst les paul he played at the Beacon show was an original...57 maybe? I don't know years of them too well, but it had been lent to him for the show, but he said it was too heavy and prefers the one he had made for him. I just found that interesting and kind of amusing.

Man you're so lucky. I haven't seen a show ever. I am such a huge fan and still. The problem is I'm only 14 so my parent wont let me leave the state for a show. If I could, I would. Well, good work on the guitars.

Hey Austin, I hadn't been to a show either when I was fourteen. Be patient. You have a long time to go see shows. I am thirty, so for me that's fifteen years worth of shows you're looking at there. The concert going experience is a little overwhelming at first. Your idols are right there in front of you- those people making all that great music that is with you every day, sometimes during parts of your day when you ordinarily wouldn't have anyone else with you. But there they are accompanying you & opening your mind in new ways. So when you see them in person it is almost surreal- dreamlike, and I have had difficulty remembering what I had seen, simply because it was so overwhelming.

So take your time. Your parents are doing you a favor by looking over you instead of letting you do whatever you want. Maybe you can get them to take you to a show & they can see a side of you they don't know that well yet. Music is a wonderful thing & many people on the Allman Brothers website meet up with friends at concerts with their whole family, because it is the music that matters & we want to share that together.

Keep on keepin' on little brother~!

Found a pic of Derek playing what appears to be a Santana Signature Paul Reed Smith (not sure though)- judging by the headstock & what appears to be a double & equal cutaway

Also, what appears to be a Martin EC 000-28 Sig Model (which could actually be a vintage 000-28 instead.

This PRS is the McCarty model (named for the former Gibson chief engineer)

http://prsguitars.com/mccarty/index.html

It is not a Santana or A Custom, both those Guitars have a tremolo
and the Custom has a five way coil tap selector knob, not a three way toggle.
The other clue is the old violin style tuners, which is unique to the McCarty.

the Gold hardward on Derek's McCarty is an optional feature.

The guitar in that picture is not a McCarty. There is another pic further up that shows him playing a McCarty, but that isn't. I believe the story is that Paul actually made a custom guitar and gave it to him for Christmas or something. Look at the headstock and the placement of the controls. It looks like the West Street Edition PRS almost.

I gotta go with GlassSlide on this one. The control knobs are different than the McCarty in the link, as well as the one that Derek is playing in the first pic. It looks as though the controls are configured to be closer together like on an SG. Although the selector switch is in a different place from an SG. it also looks like it may be either/both a satin/French polish finish & non-flamed top.

I copied the wrong picture into my post.

The one Slowhand6 identified as custom in his post is the McCarty. GlassSlide is correct on that one.

The one I did copy into my post is not a "custom" either. I have a "custom 24" The "Custom" is
a production guitar line in both 22 and 24 fret models. They have coil tapped pickups
with a five way selector knob, not a three way toggle like the picture shows

What GlassSlide is calling "custom" is what PRS calls "Private Stock." That's their
name for nonproduction guitars. It's just a different naming convention at PRS

It has a Santana body, but the bridge is like the McCarty (hence my mistake).
A production Santana has a tremelo system and a different Headstock.
So the Private Stock Guitar Derek is playing looks like a Santana Body but with
McCarty neck, bridge and Headstock. Can't tell which Pickups are in it as his
hand is blocking the picture.

I've seen him play the McCarty at some shows but not the Private Stock guitar.

Thanks for catching my mistake GlassSlide.

They have a gallery of Private Stock Guitars at the PRS web site, Derek's isn't show.

http://prsguitars.com/privatestock/gallery/index.html

Peace
John

Hey John, It looks to me (after visiting the PRS link you provided) that Derek may be playing something non-production, BUT closest to Privatee Stock #919, in this link: http://prsguitars.com/privatestock/gallery/index.html (2nd from last at the bottom- if you click on the image it will open anoterh window as a larger picture).

The differences being, as you mentioned- the bridge (stop vs trem), finish (satin/French polish vs glossy), & non-flamed top. Also the headstock inlay of the PRS script (vs the eagle), & truss rod cover (plain vs om) are different on Derek's. I also just noticed it appears that Derek's has Gibson-style keystone tuners versus the ebony-buttoned locking PRS tuners; and a bone/celluloid nut versus ebony/black celluloid on the Private Stock in the picture.

Yes It is definitely not a production guitar.

PS # 919 looks like a Santana but with gold hardware.

Derek's has more non Santana model features. It's more
like a Santana/McCarty hybrid. A very nice guitar indeed.

There is a photo on somebody's sig line with Derek and Susie both playing SGs.
Derek's SG looks like it has one of those straight tailpiece covers which has that whammy bar that folds over and looks like you actually pull it in toward the strings to activate it.
Old guitar.
