LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rarely seen performances by Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison, Joni Mitchell and a slew of other superstar acts have been unearthed for "The Best of the Johnny Cash TV Show," a two-disc DVD set due in stores September 18.

The series, which ran from the summer of 1969 to March 1971, captured Cash at the height of his popularity, and provided an invaluable national showcase for an astonishing array of singer/songwriters of all genres.

Other performers on the Sony release include Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Linda Ronstadt, Ray Charles, Glen Campbell, Derek and the Dominos, Pete Seeger, Louis Armstrong, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, Charley Pride, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

The package boasts 66 performances in all, with Cash often collaborating with his guests. Duet partners include Dylan on "Girl from the North Country," Orbison on "Oh, Pretty Woman," Haggard on "Sing Me Back Home," Mitchell on "Long Black Veil," Armstrong on "Blue Yodel #9." and Chet Atkins on "Recuerdo De La Alhambra." Cash also performs with his wife, June Carter Cash, and the Carter Family on many tunes.

To the occasional unease of ABC, which broadcast the show, Cash often sang religious tunes, such as "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)?," and "Silent Night." Such forays are largely missing from the DVD, as are clips of guests such as Jose Feliciano, the Monkees and the Guess Who.

Neil talks about being hired for the Cash show, writing a song for the show, then being canceled, then being rehired on the recent Massey Hall recording. Also, I remember a story about Kristopherson planning to do Sunday Morning Coming Down and the censors did not want him to sing the line "wishin' lord that I was stoned." He did it anyway to Johnny's deliight. And the Dylan/Cash Girl of the North Country is fantastic, I may get the DVD just to see that; that track always gets a repeat from me.

IF this is the same DVD set they offered on PBS as part of their August membership drive I will have to wait for some very favorable reviews before considering this one. Didn't watch it all, but the 45 minutes or so I did see had alot of lip-synching "performances"
Enjoyed EC's "live" performance. Neil's "live" "Needle & TDD" is a bonus on his wonderful Heart Of Gold DVD.

Wayne, I knew you'd be here brother...you've been a wonder with helping out my Cash stash. I haven't forgotten about that project and matter of fact just went back over some footage this past weekend...I've located some more good stuff, including some fine '94 material but still have been hoping to find the legendary Viper Room video. That one would make it a go...

The Derek and the Dominos is the only one I remember seeing back then. This looks like a great collection.
