It looks like the Antigallican (Anti-French!) has had a refurb since I visited it before a match at The Valley.

It was real dive then!

Jason Isbell at Newcastle Cluny tomorrow, but great news that the Jayhawks will be headlining at The Sage during the extremely up and coming Summertyne Americana Festival in July.

I'm going to see Jason Isbell on Thursday, almost entirely on the basis of Jim Rudge's raving about him!

Kathleen Turner in Bakersfield Mist matinee in the afternoon so it should be a grand day out!

Surprised at how busy it was.

Much rockier than I'd expected.

Started off with five or six really strong songs; very slick, tight band; really impressed.

After an hour, it all began to sound too much the same for me. Most of the audience were clearly familiar with the material and seemed to love it, it has to be said.

The support act, St Paul & The Broken Bones were impressive. The singer tried too hard and his voice lacked true soul for me, but promising and back in September.

Good night out for 18.50, all in all!

Hollis Brown currently on UK / European Tour:

6/03/14 Birmingham, UK @Hare and Hounds
6/04/14 Newcastle, UK @ The Cluny 2
6/05/14 Nottingham, UK @ The Maze
6/06/14 Liverpool, UK @ Zanzibar
6/07/14 Easton, UK @ Maverick Festival Warm-UP
6/08/14 London, UK @ Garage Upstairs

If you're into seventies rock with a light dose of americana and blues go and check them out. Very catchy songs.
If you like early Neil Young, Tom Petty, CCR, etc. you might dig them. Saw them yesterday and had a blast.

Bluesfest Daytime Stroller schedule has been announced.

It's pretty much the same acts in rotation over the five days and less interesting acts too, imo.

Add a 50% (?) increase to 15.30 per day and it's nowhere near the great bargain it was last year. I doubt I'll attend more than one, if any.

I received an e-mail this morning about pre-sale tickets for Joanne Shaw Taylor's tour in November.

For the Shepherds Bush Empire show, there is VIP seating on sale at 52.50 compared to 19.25 for regular seating.

Curious to see what VIP seating consisted of, I found that it is for seating in the first two rows - and part of Row 3 - in Level 1, plus entry to sound-check, meet & greet with signing & photo opportunity prior to the show at 4:30pm, signed tour artwork and exclusive VIP Lanyard and Laminate.

Considering the pre-sale doesn't start until Friday 6 June, the theatre is surprisingly well sold - no seats at all available in Level 2 - which seems very strange!

Anyway, what do people think of the VIP deal? Is the premium worth the package? Not necessarily for Ms Shaw Taylor, who I do not know, but for other acts?

I can't say I'm fussed about seeing a sound-check for a show I'm going to see, or a lanyard and laminate.

It would be a shame if Rows 1 and 2 of Level 1 became reserved for VIP punters, I think.

They won't generally put Level 2 on sale until level 1 is sold.

As for VIP tickets, she's having a laugh isn't she?

That did occur to me, Rasc, but the ground floor is pretty solidly sold which is odd before the pre-sale has started!

And I agree about the VIP bit... ideas above her station, methinks!

Not sure where a VIP area would be, I was lucky to get a AAA pass and i dont see anywhere thats particularly VIP unless they put seating in downstairs and allocate the front row... on her last visit to that venue it was fairly full but there were seats available.

Al, see my post: the VIP area is the first two rows, and part of Row 3, on Level 1 (lowest balcony).

What I have always considered the best seats in the house!

North Mississippi Allstars, Brooklyn Bowl, London. August 3rd.

And for those that are interested, Umphrey's McGee will play an all covers show on their Friday gig at the Brooklyn Bowl in a couple of weeks time.

Matt Schofield at the Newcastle Cluny on Wednesday. Only previously seen his brief cameo with Susan T a few years back at the 100 Club but read nothing but good stuff about him on here. More importantly though, opening is local hero Johnny Dickinson making his first live appearance after a long illness that made it doubtful for a while if he could ever play guitar again. Really looking forward to this.

I can totally understand that feeling, i have tickets for the Saturday show, and would have been very disappointed myself. But knowing some of the covers they do live, i decided to treat myself to a ticket for the Friday show too.
UM are one of those bands though i suppose...i'd love to hear Words or Mantis or In The Kitchen or Cemetary Walk or Divisions...chances are i'll hear none of the above.

Support for Thursday is Godsticks, whilst Friday and Saturday is Syd Arthur.
