Jimmie Van Zant is going to be playing in my hometown July 11th & 13 at a local coffee shop. All I could find on the internet is that he is Ronnie, Johnny and Donnie's cousin and Amazon has one out of print cd for $50! Have any of you seen him live? Is he worth checking out? Why is he just popping up on the scene so to speak?

Van Zant arrested on drug charges

He is related to former Lynyrd Skynyrd leader, Ronnie Van Zant.

By Bridget Murphy, The Times-Union

Jacksonville musician Jimmie Van Zant, a cousin to famed Lynyrd Skynyrd band members, went to jail Monday night on cocaine charges after police pulled over his truck on a traffic stop.

The 50-year-old Jacksonville native and Fernandina Beach resident has his own Southern rock group, The Jimmie Van Zant Band. He listed his job on his jail booking report as a self-employed singer.

Police said they found several small rocks of crack cocaine between the center console and the driver's seat of the 2003 Mitsubishi Montero he was driving. There also were two half-empty cans of Busch beer in the truck's console, beer cans littered throughout the truck and a cold 12-pack on the back seat, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report.

"It's not mine. I don't do that," police said Van Zant told the officer who asked him about the crack rocks.

After arriving at the jail, police said they also found Van Zant hiding a small plastic baggie under his foot and between his toes. It also had several crack rocks in it, according to the singer's arrest report.

He told authorities he had a prescription for the half-tablet of Valium that police said they found in his pocket during the same search at the jail.

Van Zant faces three felony charges: cocaine possession, possession of a controlled substance and introducing contraband into a county detention facility.

Police also charged him with having an improper tag light on the truck and having an open container of alcohol while driving.

The incident happened about 8:40 p.m. at 39th and North Main streets after police said they signaled for Van Zant to pull his vehicle over five blocks earlier.

Police said the singer's female passenger tried to put together a story about how the two met that night at a closed Chinese restaurant on Main Street while not realizing that an officer already was standing outside the tinted windows listening to them.

Police said the stories the two gave them separately about how they knew each other and how they met didn't match.

Police released the passenger, calling 37-year-old Hue Johnson of West 25th Street a witness to the singer's arrest. State records show the woman has a history of arrests for carrying narcotics paraphernalia, including an arrest on the same charge last month.

Van Zant's booking agent Tony Saldano from T&T Booking Agency told the Times-Union on Tuesday afternoon that he hadn't heard anything yet about the singer's arrest.

"Oh my God! Can I call you back?" Saldano said.

Florida records show that Van Zant, whose real name is Jimmy Kelsay, had a drunken-driving charge in the 1980s and a probation violation arrest later stemming from that offense. The singer was still behind bars by late Tuesday afternoon, with his bail at $4,500, a jail official said.

Van Zant is cousin to former Lynyrd Skynyrd leader Ronnie Van Zant, who died with five others in a 1977 plane crash, current Skynyrd vocalist Johnny Van Zant and .38 Special band leader Donnie Van Zant.

The Web site for The Jimmie Van Zant Band says its next gig will be Saturday in Sandwich, Ill., followed by a Feb. 16 concert in Edgewood, Md.

I think I bought that CD just for the Van Zant connection, don't think I ever listened to it. I'll have to check it out.

Maybe there's a cover of "That Smell" on it....

Something seems wrong about changing your name to cash in on the Van Zant name. I don't think I'm going because they announced tickets were $25 advanced and $30 at the door or $40 for both nights. I think this is kind of high for someone who only has one out of print independent label cd out and makes his living singing Skynyrd's songs. I think he should be more in the $10 price range.

Yup, I did grab this one. Listening now. Fairly generic latter day Southern Rock. That's not a knock, I'm enjoying it. It's just not anything we all haven't heard 1000 times before.

No "That Smell" cover. "Simple Man" instead.

The big jam tune is (not surprisingly) "Ronnie's Song"

Ironically there's another tune "Bad Habits" where he's moaning about a woman's bad habits bringing him down.
