I just got back from his show at Westbury. Amazing!!!. Next to Gregg, one of the best white blues singers ever IMO. Lots of Doobie Bro hits but the highlight for me was his version of Ray Charles "You Dont Know Me". Great show

You mean the guy that ruined the Doobie Brothers original sound?

I was there too and he is still as great singer. That song you mention & Hallelujah were highlights. Very good backing band.

I have always liked the one he did with
Carly Simon .. "You Belong to Me".
Very distinctive vocalist like him or no.

Wasn't he with the Dead from '79 to '90?

I think Tom Johnston leaving the band to get healthy had alot to do with it too...

Wow I dug every version of the Doobs.
I think Takin' It To The Streets and Living On The Fault Line were both out of this world.
I love these 2 LPs . Post Doobs never really listened much to Mike, got way too commercial for my taste even like he was trying not to sound like Mike McDonald.

That's a good point. I guess "changed" is a better word.

Best description of his "distinct" vocal was that he sings like he has a mouth full of ice cubes.

All I can think of with McDonald (other than he is a human bassett hound) is "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," where all they play in the electronics store is his concert DVD.

I liked the Doobies with or without him. His solo stuff is a little too mellow for my taste but I did enjoy seeing him with the Doobies on the "Minute By Minute" tour! Anyone remember their cameo on the television show "What's Happening"? That was cool!

As Paul Rudd says in "The Fourty-Year-Old Virgin"; "If I hear "Ya Mo Be There" one more time, I'm gonna "Ya Mo" Burn this place to the ground."

Great voice indeed.

The Doobie Brothers were going down hill before he joined the band. "Stampede" was garbage.
As a matter of fact, he saved them and probably helped them make more money than they ever would again.

When he left they went back to making "cut out bin records" again.

Funny how people's tastes are so different, because to me, hearing his voice is like nails on a chalk board.

My opinion....

As with ABB, I like all the incarnations of the Doobs. I'm not as familiar with the most recent incarnation and haven't had the opportunity to hear them yet.

I do believe Michael McDonald saved the Doobs in the 70's after Tom Johnston departed the group. Patrick Simmons could have perhaps carried the band. Maybe he didn't want that pressure. Who knows? You can't deny that they had huge commercial success with MM. Good or bad, the Doobs' success continued and rose to a new level with him.

The thing that makes MM recognizable IS his voice. Like it or love it, when he sings, you know it's him. There are so many cookie cutter bands out there today and it's hard to tell which band is which, because the singers and the songs all sound the same. When you hear MM and the Doobs, you know it's them. The same can be said for Tom Johnston, so in that respect, the Doobs are lucky to have had such recognizable front men.
