Sarah Palin, in her own words

What does Sarah Palin have to say for herself?

On abortion: [I am as] pro-life as any candidate can be. [I have] adamantly supported our cause since I first understood, as a child, the atrocity of abortion. (2002)

On her son, who has Down syndrome: I'm looking at him right now, and I see perfection. Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect? (2008)

On abortion and gay rights: I am pro-life and I believe that marriage should only be between and [sic] man and a woman. (2006)

On marijuana [then legal in Alaska]: I can't claim a Bill Clinton and say that I never inhaled. (2002)

On creationism and evolution (via Tapped): Teach both. You know, donít be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important and itís so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And, you know, I say this, too, as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject -- creationism and evolution. (2006)

On education: I envision a world class educational system founded upon the principles of safety, quality, social responsibility, parental involvement and fiscal accountability. Education is a service the state is mandated to provide. I strongly believe in providing an adequate level of funding to ensure high quality public schools. (2006)

On the energy crunch: I beg to disagree with any candidate who would say we can't drill our way out of our problem or that more supply won't ultimately affect prices. (2008)

On polar bears: We believe that listing polar bears as [an endangered species] is a significant threat to development, because most live on the North Slope. (2008)

On gun rights: I am a lifetime member of the NRA, I support our Constitutional right to bear arms and am a proponent of gun safety programs for Alaska's youth. (2006)

On Iraq (via ThinkProgress): I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. (2007)

On global warming: A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I'm not one though who would attribute it to being man-made. (2008)

On her favorite meal: Moose stew after a day of snowmachining. (2008)

On God and destiny: I believe everything happens for a purpose. In my own personal life, if I dedicated back to my Creator what I'm trying to create for the good . . . everything will turn out fine. (2007)

On government and economics: Local government is the best government, so I'll work to restore municipal revenue shares... trickle down the State's wealth to relieve local property tax burdens as we acknowledge the plank in our platform that preaches truth: the most effective, responsible, and responsive government is government closest to the people... so tie strings to the revenue if you must, allow it only to be used for basic public safety or education needs if you must, but trickle it down! (2006) [Ed: If someone can explain to me what this means, I'd appreciate it.]

On politics as usual: I refuse to use divisive tactics that polarize individuals for political gain. As Mayor of Wasilla, the fastest growing area of Alaska, then as Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, I approached issues in a non-partisan way. (2006)

On being VP [1]: As for vice president, it would be certainly an exciting thing to consider, but to me it's so farfetched and out there that I don't spend any time thinking about it because we have so many things to do in Alaska. (2008)

On being VP [2]: As for that VP talk all the time, Iíll tell you, I still canít answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? Iím used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that weíre trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question. (2008)

On her husband (hat tip to Robin Sneed): First dude. (2007) [Ed: This is an unverified attribution; it may be that Sarah Palin does not actually refer to her husband as 'first dude'--but it's too much fun to pass up.]

11. Are you offended by the phrase ďUnder GodĒ in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?
JB: No.
SP: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and Iíll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.

Does she know that our founding fathers never heard of the pledge of allegiance? That phrase went in in 1954. Classic!

Never mind the 1954 Under God add to the pledge, it was written in 1892 by a Christian Socialist(socialist, like Obama!). Who are your founding fathers, Gov Palin?

Small point here but Under God wasn't always part of the Pledge of Allegiance:

June 14, 1956: President Eisenhower signed a congressional resolution which added the words "under God" to the The Pledge of Allegiance.

She had said that if it was good enough for the founding fathers, then it was good enough for her. The founding fathers never even knew what the pledge was as it wasnt written until 1892.

I thought you wrote the last part of your initial post about the pledge, but I see it also said the founding fathers never heard of the pledge, so it looks like you knew that. But the author of the pledge was a Christian Socialist, whatever that is. I was just noting the irony since others charge Obama as a socialist.

That gives me a warm feeling.

Yet the Rep. spokesman was trying to tell us how she led the Alaska Nat. Guard in Iraq.

Of course he didn't have a single instance of her doing anything to "lead" them, but he sure tried.

Beyond that, a rep (General I think) of the Alaska Guard said that her role (and even his) is nothing as the Feds run the NG and even when deployed or active, the Governor isnt even briefed on activities. This is more pathetic crap from the Right trying desperately to make Palin into someone credible. Wait until you hear the defense of her "foreign policy experience" being that she lives close to Russia. (Im so not kidding).

Honest answer about smoking pot, puffery about education, seems to want a lesser role for federal gov't, encourages non partisan policies and likes the inclusion of God in the Pledge. I don't disagree with these.

However, these are not issues I vote on, so she isn't tilting me toward McCain with them.

Alaska used to be part of Russia. They are trying to take it back just like Mexico is trying to take back the Southwest by flooding the area with illegals. You don't hear much about the illegal Russians crossing the Bering Strait when it freezes, but it is happening. That is why, as the Commander in Chief of the Alaska NG, she is leading the fight to close that border.

Or not.

Wonderful. Youre channeling Derek now....

Just curious, how many of you vote for a vice president when stepping into the booth? Is that a big factor in your decision?

Usually it's not a big concern who attends state funerals, but when the candidate is 72 years old, you can't ignore his certain mortality. But apparently it is a big factor to Rush Limbaugh!

You always have to consider that at any time the VP could become the president. You hope it never happens.

Right. McCain is actually unlikely to die in office actuarily. But who would have thought the youngest man ever elected would die in office and it happened.

If Bush #41 can win with Quayle...well, let's just say the VP picks are at best a marginal influcence on the overall electorate.

It would appear Sarah Palin is some sort of threat to our left-of-center friends. I haven't seen such venom here, or in the blogs and media for quite some time. Rock on!

Which actuarial tables are you looking at that takes into account his mulitple bouts of cancer, his time as a POW and the fact that we still dont know much about his health as access to his medical records were severely limited.

No, we see an unqualified candidate. We also are quite glad she is the nominee since she is an "extreme conservative". Only helps shore up the base, which were voting for McCain anyway, even if they didn't like it. Her selection does nothing for the R's to go after the middle and as many have said, you need the middle to win.
