I started this discussion in the Lounge and LPS stated he thought it would make a good thread...so here goes.

I have gotten to the point where I am extremely picky about the sound quality of shows I download. Keeping in mind the histroical or personal perspective on shows, I tend to now stay away from recordings that are not so good.
As Rob stated, as with the current state of pop culture, everything is available almost immediately and with great sound qaulity, so you get spoiled.

What say you all....

I am not picky I am thankful that bands allow taping of their shows and I am grateful for everything I have and I think TAPERS Rock without them I would have nadda.

I didn't used to be, but lately I've become more picky without a doubt. There are so many good sounding recordings circulating these days that I've just become spoiled and can't help it. This doesn't just apply to recent shows, there are many excellent sounding shows circulating from as far back as the 50's.

I think because of the ease and almost unlimited availability of shows for of downloading and the fact that recordable discs are so inexpensive, I will listen to anything that interests me, regardless of sound quality unless it is poor, and then decide after listening to it, whether I want to keep that particular show in my collection. Because I really enjoy bands and guitarists from the 60s/70s, I ofter do want to hear a show even if the quality is not stellar.

I find that unless something is very unique about a show than I want great quality. Because the honest answer is that I won't really play it otherwise. It isn't really a matter of SBD vs taper for me because some taped shows are stellar and some SBds are not.

Ed's problem is that he just has too many shows.

You might want to edit the title... this is about bootlegs, not concerts right?

I am thankful to be able to listen to shows regarless of the quality.... Unless it is an "official" recording that I paid for like Instant Lives, then it better be damn good.

for the Bands That Allow Taping we've def. become spoiled as tapers don't have to stealth and a huge % of the shows are recorded with high-end equipment in the open-air

Finding the gems from Zappa, Jimi, Floyd, Zeppelin and the like is a taller order

Having started collecting in the 80's with cassettes/vinyl and who knows how many generations on 'em I don't mind digging thru the dirt to get the gold

And like Phillybob said without the tapers we wouldn't have nada! Have you hugged a taper today?

Last time at Beacon in 2007 I thought sound was too low. I think that is one nof the reasons there are so many conversations going on at shows these days. TURN IT FRICKEN UP!!! ITS A ROCK CONCERT ALREADY.

Thats what I'm looking at right now and deciding if I want to start limiting the artists I DL or bnp for.

I started that a while ago. I have a stack that I have never really had time to seriously listen to. The stack just keep kept getting bigger. Especially with all you guys throwing in bonus shows to every package. Damn people!

I guess I have gotten pickier too. I use to grab what ever was out there. But with the legal torrent sites, I have a lot of live shows that the quality on some is aweful, but there are quite a bit that is pretty awesome. At one time they all were bootlegged. I am glad we have a lot of bands that allow taping now. I still buy most of the bands releases, so we me, it helps their sales
allowing fans to tape.

"bootlegs" are only tapes from artists who don't allow taping, or are purchased copies of shows from bands that allow taping...

agreed on the sbd v. aud recordings, there are bad versions of each, some of the sbd's just don't capture the true feel of the show w/o the audience reactions in there.
